    Hi,
I'm trying to covert some avi file to mpeg 1. Each file only last for 23min My setting are system video+audio, motion search precision is normal, 4:3 NTSC, 640X480. VBV(auto), Bitrate 1150. My question is how come on some I get very good encoding speed such as 30min for a 23min video. Then I get 1hr 20min for another 23min video. So, I tried the to encode the file that tmpg did within 30min. And it still did it within 30min. However the 3rd time I try encoding it, I get 1hr and 20min just like teh rest. Is there a way to make Tmpg encode at 30min or something? Not to mention the 30min encoding quality is just as great as the 1hr and 20min one. Also, the 30min one video size came out ot be 233mb while the 1hr 20min one came out with 1.4gb. I'm so confuse here. I would understand that the encoding time caries b/c of different video. However, even when I use the same file it varies. Anyone got any idea what is the problem or what setting I should set to get that 30min encoding. BTW, I have tmpg 2.59. Thx for your time and help.

The longer the video, the longer TMPGEnc(or any encoder for that matter) is going to take to encode. I don't know why you're so surprised a two hour movie takes longer to encode than a 23 minute one. As for the file size, VCD mpeg-1 uses up aproximately 10mb per minute of video because of the bitrate necessary(1150kbps video + 224kbps audio). File size is determined by the bitrate used and the length of the video.

Oh no, all the video I was trying to encode was 23min each. Not one 23min while the other 2hr long. That I could understand. Just Video A(23min) take 30min to encode. Then Videob&C(23min) take 1hr and 20min. Then I just re encode VideoA to see if I get 30min encoding and I did. Until I try re encode Video A the 3rd or 4th times that I get 1hr and 20min. And I kept the same setting for video A as I did for Video B&C. And teh funny things is Video A size was 233mb while Video B&C was 1.4gb. I'm just curious what could have done the trick to encode that fast with the same video quality while it's 7 times smaller in size.

It would help if you described the specs of each source file, i.e. resolutions and audio and video compression types. Open the source files with Virtualdub MPEG2, then go to File>File Information. I suspect the 1.2gb was created from an XviD avi with variable bitrate mp3 audio. You will get a VBR audio error as soon as you open the file with Vdub if it does. TMPGEnc doesn't decode compressed audio very well and seems to choke on VBR mp3.

No, I didn't get any error.

    Video A(fast encoding) source spec:
    Image:
    640x480

    Audio:
    Duration 23:59
    Bit rate: 128kbps
    Audio Format: Mpeg layer-3

    Video:
    Frame rate: 23f/s
    data rate: 125 kbps
    Video sample size: 24bit
    Video compression: 3ivx D4 4.5

    Video B(slow encoding) source spec:
Everything is the same as Video A except:

    Video:
data rate: 120kbps instead of 125kbps

For video b, try decompressing the audio to PCM wav. Open it with Vdub, go to the audio menu and select "full processing mode", then go to File and select "save wav". Use the wav file as the audio source in TMPGEnc and try encoding again.

I still get the same 1hr and 20 or so encoding time. I guess it was a fluke or something to get that 30min encoding for a 23min video on a normal quality setting. Thx alot for your time and help teegee.

EDIT: I just figure it out. I didn't use check noise reduction for Video A while I did for VideoB. That explain why I get 30min instead of 1hr and 20min. DOH...sorry for wasting your time.

No problem. I'll just think twice about replying to your threads in the future.

    I'm just kidding....sorta not though.
