  1. I have downloaded a 700 mb .avi movie.. I know want to convert it to mpeg2 so I can watch it on my standalone(my standalone doesn't support xvcd so I always do mpeg2 files)
    how do I know what bitrate I should use? and how much bigger does the mpeg2 file get? is it any program that simply change the format to mpeg2 without any quality loss?
    please help me

    While waiting for an answer you could have figured it out by yourself alreaddy.
    However, it is that simple. Just check the length of the movie and calculate the bitrate.

    length of the movie in seconds? minutes?
    whats the difference between bitrate and datarate?

  7. ok, thnx. one question... will the quality of the 2 svcd discs be almost as good quality as the 700 mb avi? the length of the movie is 86 min.. Will there be a big diference in quality compared with if I should have ripped the movie from a dvd..?

    @kimpan, it depends on the quality of the source. You can use quite a high bitrate (2400+128 I believe) and also you should play around with some filters (noise reducer). DivX is supposed to be quite a bad source for SVCD creation, probably a low resolution x(s)vcd will look better.
    Only you can say what is good quality for you. Cut a short clip and have some (well, a lot) tests.

    @Neorain, a bitrate calculator (bitrate=datarate) helps you to calculate the filesize of MPEG. If you like to fit a movie onto 2 CD's, calculate to fit the movie onto 2 CD's and fill both CD's to its edge.
    My favorite calculator is FitCD. You know the length of the movie (86 minutes). FitCD calculates for single CD's, so type 43 min and the media type (CD-R 74/80/99). If you selected audio rate of 128, you get about 2400kpbs video bitrate.

    Use 2400+128--> 2 complete filled CD-R's
    Use 2500+224--> you need a 3rd CD-R
    Use 1800+128--> you waste space.

    hope it helps.

    the quality of the divx is very good, almost dvd actually.. what size should I use? 288*352, 480*480? if I do a svcd that is. I use 2pass vbr... think 480*480 would look nice?
    it is not so much movements in the movie

    Start with 480x480 @ 2400kbps. I think it isn't necessary to use VBR 2pass at that high bitrate. It depends on the source frame size too. It might be useless to enlarge the framesize (320x240-->480x480).
