I recently just installed windows xp pro and today as i was opening a movie in .avi format, it played ok just no sound so i already knew what i needed (i thought) so installed the ffdshow codecs and then when i opened the same .avi file in windows media player it gave me the "send error report" error so i cancelled that and it closed. I thought that if i uninstall the ffdshow and install the nimo lite codec pack it would fix it but it didn't it still gives me the error. I have since uninstalled both (ffdshow and nimo lite) and it still gives me the error. I tried to install a new player called Core Media Player and when i open the .avi file it gives me the error in that program as well. it has to be something with .avi files since both programs are doing it. Can anyone help? thanks in advance.

In order to play an avi you must have the audio and video codecs installed on your system...and avi's can be made from any of several different codecs. Codec packs usually will install the most widely used codecs but they can cause conflicts if you get too many installed. It's better to test your avi's with something like Gspot or Avicodec and then install only the codecs that are required.
