But this forum is based on opinion (almost) as much as it is based on fact and technical knowledge.

That's true, but I think most of the time, opinion can be clearly delineated from the facts, unless the person doesn't know what he/she is talking about.

It may be too late, but I've started a new thread in order to curtail the threadjacking.

I think that the original question was answeed and/or solved several times.

I'm not posting on the other stuff I decided this is a help site so I'll post my findings in the hope of helping others.

The DVD in question seemed to have a problem with ATI DVD player software. All the computers we tried playing it in, had ati software. I found after the attempt it wouldn't play other dvd's either. Including ones it would previously play. Fixes ranged from repair installs of the software to setting dvd region to uninstall/reinstall of the software in question.

The DVD that caused this problem was a video of a live music concert by mercury records. Maybe a new copy protection?

Doubtful. Did you try removing ATI DVD Player? All you have to do is run the uninstaller from control panel and choose "modify". Uncheck "DVD plaer" and away it goes. I got rid of it a long time ago. Power DVD is a much better player anyway.

For one of them we did remove ati dvd player and put powerdvd on for him. But now that seems to be having trouble with some things as well. Won't get all the way through other dvd's. I should get a look at that computer later after he picks this one up.

If it were me, I would download all the latest ATI drivers and MMC(including the handy little uninstall utility) and remove all ATI products, then re-install everything. You might even want to consider re-installing XP over the present installation as a last resort.

one question about going to powerdvd over the ati... His ati card has hardware decoding as opposed to software.... will powerdvd use the hardware decoding?

Yes it will. To be more exact, it uses hardware acceleration. You may have to enable it in the options menu. I don't remember if it is set as default.
