Yes codec questions.... (mostly when using iuvcr for cap)

    1. where are they located and how do you load/unload them? I've noticed a very different set from one computer to another... can I transfer them?

    2. should the extension always be .avi? iuvcr does not "auto assign" the extension so should I be setting the extension based on the codec I'm using? How do you know what the correct extension is?

    3. Yes... I've used huffy (.avi) with fine results but, There is a bevy of other codecs to choose from that don't seem to overtax the cpu... What others are good to use (ex:efficient file size)?

    Thanks... confused in codec land

Q1)To find installed codecs try (allows removal etc):

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel: System..
Hardware Tab -> Device Manager -> Sound Video & Game Controllers:
    Video Codecs (properties) properties tab
    Audio Codecs (properties) properties tab

Don't know if you can simply transfer them but I doubt it. To install all the codecs you will ever need (CORRECTLY) lookie here... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608

Q2) AVI files are generic i.e. they contain whatever. Use GSpot that will tell you what codec is required to play the file, if the required codec is indeed installed and can even test render the file for you!
I suppose it is always good practice to save an AVI file with the .avi extention....

Q3) Try DivX, DivX (DivX Smiley), XviD. These seem pretty standard codecs. Also install the AC3 audio codec aka ffdshow.

    Hope this helps.

    Work you bloody thing....
