  1. I don't know if this has been disscused but...

It's ok to copy a Show, Movie or sport event (Even in HD) to a TIVO Hard Drive yet... it's "illegal" to copy said movies ETC from that HD to a DVD.

What about those people who have huge TIVO HD's. They could keep movies forever.

I don't want to get into a huge discussion about the legality of copying the show but, more of the medium it's copied to.

Why is a TIVO HD ok to keep a movie copied to yet it's not ok to put it on a DVD... or is it?
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

timeshifitng rules still apply, you're suposed to delete once it's watched. of course no one would buy a Tivo that deleted a recording once viewed (what about your spouse/housemate/child?) so it's left up to the user to do the right thing. as a Tivo lives under your TV and can't burn onto a disc/videotape itself (not yet as far as i know, anyway) you can't lend it to a friend or sell it on, wheras a DVD-R you can do so easily.

Once you're all digital and there's ethernet connectors on every box, TV networks will be next to have a wobbly.

  3. I see advertising about people adding HD's to a TIVO, so ifyou can add it, you can take it out. I suppose new rules would apply once you take it out.

Just playing in the gray area. I've always gone against the "Machine".

The best way to play in the grey area is to not broadcast your activities.

    You assume to much.

By "Playing in the gray area"... I mean, standing up and saying Why. Why is it ok for the TIVO company yet, not for the average consumer.

It's ok for them to make and sell a product that "to me" is stealing. TIVO gives you the power to make a digital HD copy (on the HD) of a movie and keep it for as long as you want.

    Seems illegal to me.

no, it's no different to a CD burner. you CAN burn copyrighted works, but you can still buy the burner. it's left up to the consumer to use the drive legally, same with Tivo.
