    Hello,

I have a Convertx 402U now. I see from the templates that it can capture 720x480 or 352x240, but there is no 352x480. Is that a valid resolution that I could modify the WinDVD creator templates to ?

    Thanks !

  2. There is no 'standard' MPEG4 resolution. Just pick whatever you think is appropriate, considering your source.

  3. Well, if you are worried about WinDVD, it seems more likely you are striving for DVD compliant MPEG2, not MPEG4, but in that case 352x480 is 1/2D1 and should be just fine.

If you really are doing MPEG4, then pyrohydra's information is GENERALLY true, especially if you intend to play the files on your computer. But, many standalone boxes that play MPEG4, especially small handhelds, do limit you to a selection of resolutions. Unfortunately, not many of them are the same, and a lot aren't "standard". In that case, you can only find the right answer by reading the doccumentation of the target box.

I am doing both mpeg 2 and 4 with windvd. I guess I will record a few test clips and see what plays on the standalone player, it can also play mpeg4.

It is interesting that the windvd xml templates list 352x480, but the mpeg4 do not.

For MPEG4 any practical resolution is good as long as the vertical and horizontal are divisible by 16 and are supported by the player.

Now that you have both M401 and M402, which one gives better quality mpeg2? I know they both give great quality but which is better?

Only have M402U here, can't compare.

  6. 352x480
is a valid resolution. AKA CVD (China Video Disc) as apposed to VCD (whose resolution is 352x240 or something like that). This format is playable on most newer DVD settops. My Apex plays them back just fine.

    Comparing the 401 and 402:

I did 352x480 @ 3000 CBR with the 401 and was better than the 402 352x480 @ 6000 VBR. Will try @ 8000 VBR, I believe in this case the 402 will win, maybe I should go for 9000 as my Apex recorder does, will experiment some more.

I am fighting with the templates, the newer version of windvd creator2 puts them in a different place and editing copies with different names and aliases does not make them show up in the selections, only editing the existing ones is ok (can tell by looking at the captured mpeg characteristics).

Would surely be nice of Intervideo to post in the help section how to edit the XML files and what parameters really mean what besides stupid questions about what is the difference between DVDRW and DVDR or DVDRAM or why one needs to rebot after an install.

Or maybe have a dialog box to select the actual parameters of the capture !!!!!

Overall, I like the 402 better.

I read from another forum Plextor is working on a tool which will allow you to customize any capture setting you want with 402U. Read it here
