  1. I have two TV specials that I want to convert to a DVD playable on a set-top player overseas. It's for my mother and her DVD player is region free, so I don't know if that affects whether NTSC, PAL or something else is the way to go. (I'm a total newbie, so maybe I'm asking the same question twice here without knowing it). All I want to do is convert the files to the appropriate format to make a playable DVD. I assume that's VOB? One file is an AVI, the other is an MPEG. How do I convert them to VOB? Is that even what I need to do before I burn them as a DVD? What software do you recommend using for this, knowing that I'm not attempting a terribly involved operation?

My other question is, how do I know what aspect ratio to convert the video into? I honestly have no idea what it was on the original broadcast, but I'm guessing it's the standard 4:3. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. I have two days to figure this out before she leaves the country and I'd like to give it to her before then.

    Thanks again.

There are dozens if not hundreds of guides here. Can you direct me to a specific one or two? Thanks.

What makes you think it's NOT involved?

First you need to encode the avi into mpeg.
Look in the guides under "Convert" for avi to dvd.
Second, you need to make sure the mpeg is also the right format.
Look in the What is, under DVD.
Third, you need to author them to dvdr.
Look in the guides under Author.

From there, you can choose the software you need to do the jobs.

Comments like that will not endear you to the members here. Hobbies don't get much more involved than this one. As you stated, there are lots of guides here. You know what? They probably all work. Take your pick.
