I dont have ebnough right now to dish out a few grand for a g4 let alone a g5 , i work with g4's and 5's here at my tech skool , BUT, since i use both PC's and Mac's and am told Macs are the best for multimedia , i will have to go the mac route later down the road. For now what is the equivalant(i knowe theres not since PC's are more for buisness oriented progs) PC to a mac. If u can drop some specs and Models and makes , and of course prices, i would much appreciate it

Pc's do multimedia just as well, and are a lot cheaper.

grab an amd XP2800 with two 160GB hard drives, 512 megs of ram, a copy of XP pro, a dvd burner, a decent motherboard, two 17" CRT monitors, a firewire card, dual output graphics card and you're all set. i priced that up to around £590, $1069 (although it'll be lower than that for you, the dollar just sucks at the moment!)

  5. Stick with Macs ... better software and a better experience in the long run.

Edu. price on a Superdrive eMac is $899, $749 for the combo drive unit.
    Edu. price on a G4 starts at $1199, and $1599 on a G5.
Also, refurb G5s with Superdrives start at $1399.

And with the G4 now in the iBook, you have even more multimedia options on the Mac.

  7. I agree with the specs put down by flaninacupboard (except step up to at least one 19" CRT)

As far as editing pictures with Photoshop, encoding/transcoding movies(including editing) with various programs, editing audio streams with audacity, and rendering CG animation with Blender and Lightwave I have never had any problems getting it done with my AMD 1900XP. You could get by just fine with $500, more money will just buy you faster rendering times, and taking that to its extreme would just lead you to an Anthlon64 or possibly a P4EE system.

Btw the "experience" with my PC is that of getting the job done, if you are looking for anything more than that maybe you should be looking for non-electronic equipment...

  8. Macs - bah! Buy a Mac if you want to get reamed by Apple for outrageously expensive hardware and a serious lack of choice with software. Note that I am saying nothing about the relative merits of either system - its just that I like my choices and don't like Apples boutique prices!!

Macs being better for multimedia hasn't been true for years. It was at one time, but not anymore.

They always tell you stuff like that. I had a professor that loved dos, but that doesn't mean dos is the best operating system. Let your budget and common sense decide what computer to get.

Good point. And also, Macs have traditionally been the darlings of academia since the '70s. Lots of professors stay with them out of loyalty since they were first with a marketed GUI (Xerox PARC claims aside).

Personal experience doing video work on both PC and Mac.... stick with what you can afford

Sure both will work, but keep in mind that if you want to go pro a lot of the "apple" video apps are 1000+ dollars.

if you cant afford the G5 then the cost of the apps you will need is something that is way out of your range.

Personally, after working with both platforms, I prefer the Mac route. But again its personal preference.

My recommendation, go with what you can afford and get the best out of what you buy.

and please, don't get a dell
