    Well and good

    But when you mean "(XviD, DivX)" why don't you say "(XviD, DivX)" ?

    For most of the computer and serious video production segments, AVI means uncompressed YUV unless tied to a codec.

    I never could understand the motives of the "XviD, DivX" community for using the "avi" suffix to describe what they are doing.

    Are they trying to capture the suffix "avi" ? If you google "avi" you get somchers children's book author so I would conclude their campaing has had limited success.

    If you google "avi video" you get dixon's

    Nowhere in that link is "(XviD, DivX)" mentioned.

    Seems like your PR campaign as been a total and complete failure.

    Sheesh. Your post would be laughable if you weren't being deadly serious. So it becomes just another mediocre thread-crap. Don't like the guide? Then don't use it. There's no agenda involved, believe me. That you would even think there is, I find mind-boggling.

    AVI acts as a container to many different formats, including two of the most popluar formats, which are DivX and XviD. Assuming the AVI you have is DirectShow compatible, than those would work with this guide as well (that would include DV AVI's, which is what I'm assuming your bitter about?)

    Ed, unless you have a relevant issue with the guide, or something else relevant to the discussion, please take your posts elsewhere. They clutter an already busy thread with garbage. If you feel DV is not being represented well, then I would suggest you write your own guide.

    At this time you did'nt choose "Close all GOPs" option in CCE enconder 2.70 and DVD Lab is complaining about that. I read that closing GOPs may cause loss of quality and letting GOPs open you loose accuracy in chapter points... Can you talk a little about this dilemma?
    Thanks

    It was meant half in jest. But why not make the title specific to XviD and DivX?

    Use of a general term to describe a specific set of subformats is not so much a conspiracy as a sign of parochial or provincial attitude. AVI means something else to those outside the XviD and DivX community.

    I will shut up now.

    Hi,

    Hope you can help here.

    I was very involved in video conversion but have been off the scene for a couple of years.

    I used your guide to ease me back in and jog the old memory.

    It worked fine first time round with one exception, which I always had.

    I cannot get the audio to sync correctly with the video.

    I used a different method to the one in your guide and remember having to stretch the audio with a wav editor once I had changed the frame rate from 24 fps to 25 fps. I cannot remember the method I used hence the reason I am here.

    I am converting a clip from 24fps to 25ps (using your guide) using TMPGenc. The audio(mp3) seems to lag by about a second once converted. I do get an error message when importing the AVI in to VitualDub but do not re-write the header (is this correct?) and save as a wav file. Is this a problem I should fix using the audio gap correct in TMPGenc using trail an error or is there an easier way? The strange thing is, the wav file and video file (converted) are still exactly the same length?!

    Also is it worth changing over to CCE with reference time saving?

    Cheers

    Ed: Because the guide is not specific to DivX or XviD. AVI is a container. This guide would work with any AVI that is compatible with Video For Windows (VFW). DV, Huffman, XviD, DivX, Ogg, MJPeg. etc. AVI only encapsulates the encoded stream within it to make it understandable to various windows applications. All of these streams are valid AVI's. Your argument makes no sense. Even an 'uncompressed' avi is made up of a series of bitmapped images. The AVI just describes the stream of data to windows for playback, telling it what audio and video codecs are used so that the data can piped through various filters for playback.

    Bourni, it's not a dilema, it's just a checkbox

    If your authoring software complains, just choose the option to close all gops, or you can set specific chapter points within CCE so that the specific frame that you want to use as a chapter point is encoded as an I frame. You will not notice a loss in quality for a DVD project, as there is plenty of bitrate to go around.

    Trigger_Ace: Does you AVISynth play without a loss of sync before you encode it? If it does then your source audio has a few corrupt frames. You should also post your script here so I can see exactly what your doing in regards to audio and framerate.

    As for switching to CCE, that would depend on whether or not your comfortable with it. CCE is definately faster than TMPGenc. Newer versions of CCE will also let you perform basic funtions like resizing and letterboxing as well, which brings it a bit closer to TMPgenc in usability. As far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong), TMPGenc still works in the RGB colorspace, which is very slow in comparison to YV12 and YUY2.

    If i bring multiple scripts into CCE it will encode one after the other, correct?
    Quote Quote
  9. Depends on how you do it. It can encode only one of them, or it can encode them all, one after the other.

    To encode one after the other, after you've got them all set up the way you want, click on the "Encode" button at the bottom of the main screen, give a name and location for the .ecl file for them all, and it'll start encoding.

    To encode just one of several, right-click on it.

  10. Hey Thread

    I am new to video encoding and have been following this guide to encode an AVI to DVD. All appears to go well until I encode the file using either Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE) or TMPGenc. The files have was encoding quite well but when the file is around 60-70% complete

    My GSPOT details for the AVI are as follows;

    audio = 0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3

    I received the following error when I opened the AVI in VirtualDubMod

    edDV: I just realized that it does say specifically that it's intended for DivX/XviD in the beginning of the guide. I've updated the text to encompass a few other formats.

    the_scarlet_pimperne: You can try scanning your AVI for errors when you load it into VirtualDub. It can re-index the AVI to work around the problem. It sounds like your avi is corrupt. There are ways you can get around this. After scanning your AVI, try saving it to a new AVI using the Huffman codec. The file will be very large (average movie lengths will give you a huffy avi that is around 20 Gigabytes). If you don't have enough space for that, then you can try just saving the avi as a new AVI using DivX or XviD with the bitrate set to CBR 9000. Huffman is lossless. DivX is not, although at those bitrates, it's pretty close. At 9000 kbps your output AVI would be about 4 Gigs, depending on the length of your AVI. It's just a ballpark, but it gives you an idea.

    It's very possible that even re-saving may crash your pc if it crashed during encoding though.

    Dentist: You can either encode them batch style, one at a time, or you can join them all into one file using the 'Setting' button. To do the last, drop your first AVS/AVI into the main window, and then use the Setting button to add the rest.

    the_scarlet_pimperne,
    Do you have this problem with one specific avi or have you ever tested another avi to see if you have crashing problems?
    If you have already encoded sucessfully another avi, then follow DJRumpy's orientation.
    If your PC crashes with all avis when you try to encode, then you should run a test to see if your PC is stable. Try to run Prime95 (google it - it's freeware) for a few hours. It will push your PC to the limits (watch temperatures and voltages during the test) and if it's very unstable you're going to receive an error in Prime95 in a few minutes.
    I'd had this crashing problems when I tryed to encode. I ran Prime95 for 3 hours and received an error message.
    I lowered my CPU clock and the problem was gone. I was running with overclocked settings and my PC have never crashed before I tryed to encode...

    Hi there!

    Well at this point it shouldnt make much diference but your guide is great. But I have one problem = /. I have a video ( xvid, 720 x 540, 23.976, 1.333 (4:3)) with subtitles on the letterbox, but when I encoded it with TMPGenc (720x480 , 4:3, pulldown to 29,970 and center(keep aspect ratio)) and burned it on a dvd with dvd-lab and finaly played on my dvd player a part of the letterbox where cut of and so a part of the subtitles.
    What should I do to add more letterbox (or fix the ratio)? I still get a little confused with AVISynth but I should use the add script? or there is a way to do that in TMPGenc?

    edit:I have another problem (i'll post here instead postingo again), I have an animation video here and I made a script for it but when i play the script on virtualdub the colors change (ex: a book that is yellow after the script its is blue). What should I do fix this??

    the script:
    clip=AVISource("C:\Documents and Settings\adm\Meus documentos\Downloads\saikano\SAikano-01.avi", False)
    aud=WAVSource("saikano-01.wav")
    AudioDub(clip,aud)
    ResampleAudio(48000)
    LanczosResize(720,480)
    ConvertToRGB24()

    Hi,

    My AVISynth is in perfect sync before I encode it. So if I have some corrupt frames can I fix these?

    Here is the script I am using:

    clip=AVISource("Clip1.avi", False)
    aud=WAVSource("audio.wav")
    AudioDub(clip,aud)
    ResampleAudio(48000)
    LanczosResize(720,576)
    AssumeFPS(25, True)
    ConvertToRGB24()

    And the info before encoding:

    Xvid
    624x352 (1.77:1) [=39:22]
    23.976
    1014 kb/s
    00:42:43 (61,462 fr)

    0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
    121 kb/s (60/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.96
    00:42:43

  15. Ah-Há!-

    1. Use FitCD with Blocks Overscan enabled to give yourself a crop/resize/addborders that adds black so you can see all the subs.

    2. Add SwapUY() to the bottom of the script.

    Trigger_Ace-

    One way is to replace the corrupt frames with the previous or next good frame. For that work, I find the FreezeFrame command very useful:

    http://www.avisynth.org/FreezeFrame

    So, if frame 1001 is corrupt, and you want to replace it with frame 1000, then:

    FreezeFrame(1000,1001,1000)

    Ah thx for your help =D

    but i solved the subtitle problem by using the add borders script (but i tried too with FitCD and thought it kind confusing) and is spelled correct this comand "SwapUY() "?? cuz I put it on the script and then on virtualdub and it said that there was no function called SwapUY() = /
    Quote Quote
  17. Oh, I'm very sorry. I typed it wrong. It's "SwapUV()".

    Please forgive me.

    Yes, FitCD is a bit confusing at first, but it's easy to learn. If your source is an AVI, then it's "1:1 Monitor". And your Destination will be DVD 720, with PAL checked or not checked, and Anamorphic (16:9) checked or not checked. Set the Blocks Overscan for 1 or 2 blocks, and check the script it generates for the correct crop/resize/addborders.

    With CCE I seem to be having a problem with the output file size being smaller than it should. Get my bitrate from the calculater, 6228(1:34:27 with 224 audio) and put that in CCE as my average CCE says output will be 4,411,688kb but the file ends up only being 3,559,509kb. Seems weird to me that it started doing this. But I had already encoded the same movie before but it was deleted.

    A framerate problem maybe? Supposed to be 23.976fps, and you have it set up for 29.97fps maybe? In the main screen, does it give the correct length?

    Still finding it impossible to go from PAL to NTSC, just can't the right time when I put itin to either Vdubmod or CCE.

    Using:
    AVISource(".avi",false)
    LanczosResize(720,360)
    AddBorders(0,60,0,60)
    AssumeFPS(23.976, True)
    Quote Quote
  23. Why are you disabling the audio in the AVISource line, but adjusting its length in the AssumeFPS line? If you are handling the audio separately, then don't put "True" in the AssumeFPS line. I don't know if that's the cause of your problem, but if it's a 100 minute PAL movie, then after the AssumeFPS(23.976), it should be roughly 104 minutes long. Check the before and after lengths in VDubMod before sending it to CCE for encoding. Also make sure that you have CCE set for 23.976fps when encoding, and either have CCE apply pulldown, or apply it afterwards yourself, using either Pulldown.exe or DGPulldown.

    I got this following script that converts NTSC to PAL, so maybe you can work from this?

    AVISource("NTSC_clip.avi") # Get clip
    Bob() # Separate fields and interpolate them to full height.
    BicubicResize(768,576) # Resize to PAL square-pixel frame size. (Use 720,576 for CCIR.)
    ConvertFPS(50) # Convert field rate to PAL, using Blend Mode.
    SeparateFields.SelectEvery(4,0,3) # Undo Bob, even field first. Use SelectEvery(4,1,2) for odd field first.
    Weave # Finish undoing Bob.

    Hi

    What does CCE with the AddBorders option in avisynth.
    Does it treats the movie as 4:3 after adding borders, since it resize the movie to 720X480?
    Can it tell the diffrents between the movie (720X360) and the borders that had being added?
    Should I check the letterbox option in CCE and mark the borders size, for helpin the encoding process (save bits etc..)?
    Perhaps its better to resize and add borders (letterbox option) in CCE 2.70 and not avisynth?

    Thanks

    I'm encoding an avi using cce,problem i have is that im trying to use a vbr and following the guide from the 1st page the output file is always 9800kbps.

    If i encode using a cbr all is well,but for some reason setting it all up with a min /max/average bitrate on vbr it comes out not as intended and way too high.Doesn't leave much for the audio to fit

    Any help greatly app

  27. It just says that in whatever you're checking with (BitRate Viewer or ReStream, for example) because you ticked "MPEG-2" and checked "For DVD". It has no bearing at all on what the average or max bitrate really is. So, if you really did it correctly, you shouldn't have any trouble authoring.

    Hi,

    I fixed my audio sync problem (see above). Just in case it helps anyone: When extracting the wav file I used Full processing mode instead of Direct stream copy. Don't why it worked, but it did.

    I've had a butchers through the website but cannot find what i'm looking for.

    How can I tell the field order of my source AVI? I understand that nearly all should be Top Field first. However, TMPGenc defaults to Bottom field first no matter what what avi I import.

    Wonderful guide, good stuff, thanks DJ

    Has produced truly excellent results, (wish my winavi issues had begun much earlier)
    A problem avi though - av sync about 1.3 sec, sound ahead....Sorry, I have read every post on the guide and tried various ideas, still got avi but no dvd yet!! When I drop the orig. avi to VDMod both a-v stutter badly, though it plays well on media player classic
    It came with ac3 audio (though sound forge wont open unless saved .wav so ? damaged or other issue.) I get it that the audio file must also be at pal rate but I cant get ac3machine to do ntsc>pal conversion as ac3machine just blinks and then nothing - as does ac3fix.
    I tried resampling the audio to lose the lag but sound forge won't drop the 100hz and resample
    at 47,900
    Is there a good alternative soft ?? for ac3 ntsc>pal convert

    I also tried using the uncompressed pcm wav with the 2nd of the guides avs options but still synch bad

    Any ideas?

    Cheers
