  1. Hi,

I’ve just bought my first DVD burner (liteon 451s), and am trying to burn video files onto a DVD to watch using my (modded) Xbox, but the files aren’t in a standard DVD format (since my PC can’t capture from my very basic TV tuner card at that high a rate). Re-rendering all my files after I record them isn’t an option due to the volume and the limitations of my PC.

I was previously doing exactly the same thing but burning onto CDs, which the Xbox read without a hitch. They’re in a range of formats, mainly Mpeg1 and Mpeg 2, at various bitrates and resolutions (around SVCD format, but not exactly, although I could standardise it if I need to), and the Xbox happily plays them all once I’ve burnt them onto CD, both CD-r and CD-rw, a range of different brands, and burnt either as CDRom(ISO) or SVCD (even though the files aren’t necessarily SVCD format).

But now I’m trying to burn the same files (or similar ones) onto DVDs (because the disks hold more data) and again watch them on the Xbox.

Where I’m coming unstuck is that the Xbox is not recognising any of the DVDs I’m making – The Xbox media centre recognises that the DVD drive isn’t empty, but can’t see any of the files, while it recognises the identical files burnt onto a CD just fine. The burner that created the disks reads them no problems.

I’m burning them using Nero 6.3.1.10, I’ve tried both DVD+R and DVD-R disks –and have tried using DVDRom UDF/ISO and setting it to be Xbox compatible, and tried using DVDRom ISO – none of which the Xbox will recognise (it has a Samsung drive in it).

Any ideas of what could be wrong? Should I try different media? Different burning software? Different settings in Nero? (I’d like to stay with Nero if possible, it’s the most user-friendly software I’ve tried, although I’ve also got Sonic MyDVD and RecordNow DX which came with the burner.)

    Any suggestions would be appreciated…

Xbox can play DVD movies and DVD games. All you need is the Xbox DVD Movie Playback Kit to play DVD movies on Xbox. does your xbox has this kit? did you tried playing original DVD not the burned one on your xbox?

  3. Yeah, I've got/done what you suggested - both the mod-chip and the DVD remote etc. It doesn't seem to be the files itself the Xbox doesn't recognise - it will read the identical files burnt onto a CD without a problem. It's when I burn the same files onto a DVD that the Xbox refuses to see them...

If you didn't author the files they would be a DVD data disc. Your player is probably looking for something more DVD compliant. A DVD is not just an oversize CD. Does the Xbox play conventional DVDs?

  6. Thanks for all your help, guys. I finally solved it this weekend with the help of someone in my local equivalent of Radio Shack who happened to know xboxes inside out. I'm now burning those same files onto a standard DVD ISO disk, and the Xbox is reading them, no problems, even without being authored like a DVD! I'm still not sure what I was doing wrong, but at least I know what to do right now.
