  1. I know none of us are doctors (Is there a doctor in the house!?) Anyway, I was just wondering, if I have medicine that says in has 200mg of Ibuprofen in it, and I can take 1 or 2 tablets every 6 hours. THEN, I also have medicine, Ibuprofen EXTRA strength which is something like 500mg that I am suppose to take 1 or 2 of...now if I run out of the EXTRA strength, would it be safe to assume I could just double up on the regular strength...(I've just got the worst damn headache and Japanese medicine sucks ass)

    Pretty much.

The max. daily dose of Ibuprofen is 2400mg (British National Formulary), but you're probably unlikely to get much benefit over 2000mg a day, only more side effects.

    Take with or after food.............

You might find that using paracetamol and Ibuprofen in a lower dose is more helpful.

  3. vitualis is a doctor - he would know this.

I would think it would be safe, provided the weaker tablets are purely ibuprofen.

As rhegedus says, combine a lower dose with paracetamol and caffeine as this will boost the effects of the painkillers further.

    Hope you fell better soon,

  4. Thanks...I am usually pretty careful with taking any medicine. In Japan, they don't explain much. I've found more info online about stuff I have had to take than what doctors tell me. Doctors and hospitals here are more like businesses...and some of them are BAD businesses. I had a friend go to the hospital because he cold wouldn't go away, and he thought it was something more serious. Doctor said "Nah...just a cold" Next day he went to a different hospital, and the doc was shocked "You know, you have pneumonia!" Well, unfortunately there arent any real malpractice laws here.

Make sure you have a little food in your stomach if you're going to take that much Ibuprofen.

I have some of the prescription ibuprofen from a backache. They seem to work better than just taking 4 of the OTC variety. The doctor verified that they are better. They call the 800mg size "grunt candy" from its popularity with the military for aches and pains.

    Glock,
That's a foul avatar My eyes keep drifting back to it - like with Dr. Gee's original thong, but for different reasons (I hope ).

4x200 still is the same as 1x800........

Except that you need a prescription for them which means more $ for your doctor and the pharmaceutical industry.

The part about dosing is true.

But,in the us anyway,we do not get paid more for writing for expensive
drugs. If what you meant was that money would be saved by not having to visit the doctor for the otc strength, then you are correct.

    Yep.

Plus, because there are usually fewer manufacturers of the higher strength formulations, and the fact that they tend to be branded as opposed to generic, they will tend to be more expensive. More $ for the pharmaceutical industry....

As for doctors not getting paid for writing prescriptions for expensive items, quite a few of my colleagues get club class flights and 5* hotels for conferences. They ain't writing generic Rx, that's for sure!

Maybe in GB,but that practice was done away with in the us. The most u get anymore is a nice dinner/lecture put on by the drug company. And that is not dependent on the use of that drug.

Wierd..... it's usually the USA they go to for conferences.

So if you're a urologist in the USA and you want to go to the International Urology Congress in Hawaii, for example, who pays for the travel etc?
    Regards,

    Rob

If you are lecturing, you get paid/comped. If you go to the conference you pay for it. You can write it off of course.

Gross income for taxation without representation!
Also of note, when you hire on to a hospital or medical corp., a $5000-$10,000 annual educational stipend is offered. You can use these monies for such a trip.

Don't they strap you over the stump for malpractice premiums?

That'll explain why the Hawaii trips are always one of the the more popular ones.

Depends on your specialty/location. It can be bad.

I think we need a poll on the place you'd least like to go on a conference to!

My vote goes to Hartford, CT. Went to New England on holiday over the summer and wished I'd left out Providence, RI and Hertford. The rest was fantastic.

Any chiropractors in your area? Headaches are easily treatable with an adjustment. This way you dont have to worry about running out of your Asprin and the headache usually goes away at the moment of the adjustment or which a couple of min.

you know the best way to get rid of headaches, try some 10-15mg loratabs or some oxycottons. you wont be feeling the headache anymore, or anything else for that matter.

  26. I don't know how a doctor would get a kickback with named brands. Can't the pharmasist give generic brands upon request of the customer (assuming there is one)? I can't remember as I have not had a perscription in over 5 years.

Not every drug has a generic. Over here in the UK, the patent lasts for about 5 years so it's branded until the patent expires.
