Convert it into a 352x240 (NTSC VCD) mpeg, use inverse telecine to change it to 23.976 fps.

Just curious - why IVTC ?

I would imagine it's to avoid motion blurring if converted to 29.97. It's not like you can do 3:2 pulldown on mpeg-1, right(I think)?

eh ? the source is 29fps why change ? I'd just leave it as 29 fps (valid for vcd)

    Right - mpg1 doesn't support pulldown flags, I think

Whoops, you got me there. I somehow got the impression the source was 23.976.

On a side note, I've had avi's in the past that were 29.97 that should have been telecined, and when I tried running IVTC while converting to mpeg the result didn't look much better.

he's encoding to VCD, 23.97 is valid for a VCD.

I suppose it depends who did the ripping in the first place. I don't do a lot of framerate conversions as I'm in PAL land and my player pretty much plays everything I throw at it 8)

I don't think I've ever ripped anything to avi - and the trouble I am having trying to get my AIW card to cap to Divx I don't think I'll bother.

I still don't know why the original avi would require IVTC

If you convert to 23.976 you get the equivalent of a 20% higher bitrate, more bits per frame. If your bitrate is high enough it won't make much difference but for VCD/SVCD it should be noticeable.

    Thanks

The bitrate increase was the only reason I would have done this. I just thought they may have been some secret that I wasn't aware of
