  1. i am in usa now & want to buy a dvd recorder that reecords PAL coz i'll take it to eeurope & egypt.
    i have 2 choices:
    pioneeer 210-s or philips dvdr985
i want to be sure that their american versions have PAL recording
which one does have better recording picture & sound in PAL format?

  2. Here's my two cents. Don't buy any DVD recorder in the US if you intend to use it later in a PAL region. Instead, buy it in Europe right before you return to your home country. I know the price in the US is more attractive, but considering the system incompatibility issues, you'd be better off with an up-to-date and compatible model than an incompatible and cheap one.

A lot of PAL users have blasted Pioneer for having a very poor PAL comb filter.

Appartently it is fine for NTSC but the PAL comb filter is not very good so I would stay away from the Pioneer.

I just bought the dvdr985 to try it out, only $80 at Circuit City - open box value. I am having problems with the created VOB files. I am doing LDs and simply want to cut the disc flip, but past the first VOB, I can't get any of the files to demux. I may be doing something wrong, but so far I am not a fan of this recorder. Just my two cents since I had just bought one.

Have you tried recording to a DVD+RW and then importing it into TMPGEnc DVD Author?

That seems to work for a lot of people.

Plus TMPGEnc DVD Author will allow you to edit although you can only edit on "I" frames which only happen about once every 15 frames give or take. So not frame accurate editing but usually close enough.

Finally found the information and combination that appears to work for me. Still testing.
    1. Record
    2. Rip in IFO mode
    3. Edit with Womble and save as MPG
    4. Demux with TMPGEnc.
    5. Import files to TMPGEnc DVD Author
    6. DVDShrink if a little over or want to lose TMPGEnc menu

DVDAuthor would claim there was no audio on the VOB files if I just imported the ripped VOBs. I was also ripping in FILE mode. Above process has worked all the way through. I am burning a test disc to check quality tonight. I am starting to like this recorder a little better, but need more testing with timer recordings off cable. So far just working with LDs. Thanks for looking and responding.

  7. rip in ifo mode using what program? I have a mini-dvd recorder I'm trying to work with and it makes a .vro file which if renamed to a .vob seems to work but then if i copy it straight to the HD and use womble mpeg editor to turn it into a mpeg i get mpl errors when I try to play the mpeg file!

    thanks!

I rip with DVD Decryptor in IFO mode. Works great.
