  1. Well, after a disappointing bout with an Amoisonic standalone VCD/SVCD recorder, it appears that I'll have to go the computer-based route. Since the system this will be running on is fairly slow, I'm assuming I'll need to get a hardware MPEG encoder, unless I want to spend 3 days encoding MPEG video . Here's the details:

Type of material to be recorded: VHS, SVHS, and laserdisc material; incoming sources will be S-VHS and analog audio.

    End product: VCD and/or SVCD.

Computer system: IBM Thinkpad 770Z with Selectadock III. 366 mHz Pentium II, 512MB RAM, 14GB hard disk space. System is running Windows XP. I have a 12x CDRW installed in the docking station. While the graphics are AGP, I do not have an AGP slot available for use. I have 2 full-length PCI or ISA slots available, as well as a half-length slot. SCSI and USB connections are available.

I tried a Dazzle USB 80, but without it being XP compatible, it was an exercise in futility.

Products I'm aware of: Dazzle DVC II (XP compatibility still pending), ADS Tech USB Instant DVD (new, waiting on real-world reviews). Canopus Storm (EXPENSIVE, my system most likely too slow).

    Any suggestions/recommendations?

heavyharmonies, Just today I got my Dazzle DVC II working with XP Pro.
I got the driver from Microsoft Windows Update !!!!!!!

The driver still doesn't appear on the Dazzle web site, but Hey who am I to argue. It works just like normal, i.e. Win 98

Did you get the DVCII to work with the preview during capture on?

Well I really hate the preview window , so I turn it off.
I have just recently found out it can't capture SVCD - So more research needed!
maybe I need to upgrade MovieStar, I just installed 4.2 and tried it at that, I've got a few things on at the moment
