I am constantly buying and trying new models to determine if they truly can be made region free. Then i post back confirming the hack and my results to contribute to the cause.
Sometimes there are popular models that you strongly suspect can be made Region Free, but no one posts a hack. (example: Memorex MVD-P1072 currently has no hack, but i suspect it does).
What i want to know is how do i contribute to discovering hacks besides just googling the web?
Any 'experts' can comment on this?
How does one proceed?
- open the unit and determine the chipset and then google for clues?
- call the manufacturer/service center support line and ask for a service code?
- randomly press buttons on the remote all day until you hit upon a special menu?
- connect a oscilloscope type device and observe signals?
- obtain a schematic and ?
- make a friend/bribe a insider at the manufacturer?
How are all these existing hacks been determined/discovered?
Aloha!

cheapo manufacturers distribute the info so the common user has access to it - this makes the players seem "worth" more. i don't even think about region coding as i tend to watch backups.
