I'm converting a divx movie with TMPGEnc.
AVIcodec gives the following info about the divx file
592mb,
typeAVI,
quality 73%,
25.0fps,
res 720x576(4:3)
I've set TMPGEnc at 4:3,720x576,25fps but i'm not sure what to set the video bitrate at.
Will 3000 be too low or too high ??
Ideally i'd like to be able to put this with another movie on 1dvdr but don't want to loose any quality if possible.
Is there anywhere that lists the typical bitrate settings for converting divx, svcd, vcd etc as i never know what is the best to choose for different conversions.

Hmm, 3000 kbps is actually pretty low for a full-D1 (PAL) encode. I personally would not encode anything at that resolution below a 5000 kbps average (using TMPGenc's 2-pass mode), and even that may be pushing it.
Here is a tool that can help you out with bitrates and file sizes:
Bitrate calculator -
i've looked at the calculator but its not really helped me because it only works for fitting movies onto a whole dvdr.
I wanted to be able to put 2 onto a single dvdr and hoped 3000kbps would be ok as the avi file was sourced from a svcd. -
The bitrate calculator does help you,it tells you what bitrate you can set your mpgs at regardless if its one movie or 10,just calculate the average play time among all the clips and you will get your proper bitrate. If you are going to put 2 or more movies on to dvdr then you might consider lowering the resolution to 352x576 which is dvd compliant, too low of a bitrate at full dvd(720x576) and the picture will start to look blocky with artifacts.
I think,therefore i am a hamster. -
The bitrate calculator will work fine if you know the total length of the 2 movies , just enter the total time for everything you want on the DVD and use that bitrate for both movies when you encode them.

ok,i've added the length of the 2 movies together and it gives me a bitrate of 3358.
Will this still allow for space needed when i create a menu etc ?
sorry for my lack of knowledge. -
It should just about.
Don't worry though , you go ahead and convert your movies and author it.
If it is slightly too large , DVD Shrink will squeeze it to fit a DVD-R perfectly.
I must say that when I have use the calculator , I have created menus and they have fitted on the disc without a problem. -
Thanks for your help, before i go ahead i'm just wondering now about selecting 352x576 or 720x576.
What's the difference ? -
I would go with 352x576. The bitrate you need to use will look better on a smaller frame size versus 720x576.
