I installed the latest BIOS "Upgrade" 4004D and it killed my recorder. It wouldn't record or even read a DVD after that. I had to go back to version 4004A to get it working again. I don't know if it needed an update because I can't find anyway to tell what version it's at, the screen always says version 2.01 no matter what. I'd like to get version 4004C because it has more features. Does anyone know where to find that version?
The older version, 4004A can be found here if anyone needs it.

BTW, the Apex website seems to be down. They haven't paid the royalties to the MPEG licensing group for the right to use MPEG2 decoding and are being sued for the second time so maybe they are going out of business.

I guess some have used that version but it killed mine. Wish I could find 4004C to try.

July 2003 (A?) and Nov 2003 (D) firmwares, with instructions.

I think August 2003 (8-8-03) was the "B" version. I do not have that one. I found this info in the DVD recorder reviews on this site.

And then maybe September 2003 was a "C" version?

I sold mine because that do not like to be turned into workhorses. Mine began to act funny when turning on or off. Use them as an average consumer, and you should be fine.

You've gotta love the Apex site:
