  1. Hey sorry I don't know where to post this one, most likely Authoring but I was not sure.

Anyway, I would like to add the THX and/or DTS intros to every movie that I make AND backup, is there a way to do this? I only have expierence with DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink. I think it should be as easy as adding the file in Re-Author mode in Shrink but I don't see an option to do so.

Any help would be great. Any curses would be understandable.

I do it all the time. Just make sure the dts/dolby intro is dvd authored, then use the re-author mode in shrink, click the dvd browser tab, find the
folder where your intro is and add it. Next just add your movie and the intro will play before your movie

  4. Speaking of THX kind of sound. Is there a way to take your music from your DVDs and give it the 5.1 treatment? That would be cool to do, but I have a feeling it would be hard to do.

your dvd's often already have 5.1 sound tracks -- how about use that one

if the movie doesn't already have the logos then it's not THX mastered or have DTS sound, so what's the point? bit misleading isn't it...?

I suppose it would be if I were selling them. The question was pertaining to the DVDs that I backup and the personal ones I create.....my bad for not making that clear.

I just like them, and when I backup my DVDs I take out everything and leave just the movie....so when I pop it in the player it starts with the DTS/THX intro thing, shows the rating, then the movie starts. That is the way I like 'em.....that is why I asked.

If the source is already 5.1, why bother. If it's not, it is possible. If you have an NLE such as Vegas, with the AC3 plugin, you can mix your own multi-channel sound tracks. I have recently done this for my daughter. She and her dancing school did a couple of numbers at a local show (fair). I video'd these on DV, but after transfering them to the PC, found that there was too much ambient noise (crowds, food stall hawkers etc.) to really here the music clearly. I got the original music, and through using multiple copies of the original DV audio, the original music tracks, and Vegas, built up a pretty convincing 5.1 mix. The teachers introduction comes out the centre speaker, the crowd reactions rise and fall as required, and while there is a good, clear music track, the original ambient noise comes subtly through the surrounds to keep the live feel.

I have remixed the audio for three numbers this way, and each has come up pretty sweet. The first mix took about 4 hours, as I tweaked and refined and worked out the best tecnique. The others took around 1.5 - 2 hours each.

  12. Thats pretty cool. By the way, I should have been more clear before. I have some videos I have shot at various concerts and I just thought it would be cool to give it the 5.1 feel on DVD. I have some great club shows on tape that I just wanted to take to the next level.

This assumes Vegas with the AC3 plugin so translate how you will for your NLE.

Duplicate the audio 3 times, so you now have 4 tracks. Allocate the first track as the centre speaker, and apply an equaliser to it. Adjust to emphasise vocals.
Grab the second track and allocate is as the LFE (for the sub woofer). Again, apply the equaliser and emphasis the bass.
If the other two tracks are stereo, simply apply one to the front surrounds and one to the rear surrounds. If they are mono, or very poorly seperated, consider duplicating again, and allocating one track per surround (4 tracks in all).

Adjust the balance to get a good spread, and look at panning and fading up and down to get some movement.

Do a test burn, listen, adjust, burn, listen etc until you are happy.

You will be limited if you are working from a single source, however you could also consider getting some stock crowd sounds to mix in for interest.
