Ummm. Not as good as DVD?
There's a lot of factors involved. A VCD will not look as good as a DVD due to the resolution. You might want to provide more specifics...

A little less than VHS quality, if that means anything to you.

  4. IMO, VCD quality depends on system, PAL is noticeable better than NTSC, around 20% higher vertical resolution, can be close to acceptable sometimes. NTSC got way too low resolution for VCD, PAL isnt exactly great either.

A lot also depends on what you're going to use for playback. I've seen the same disk get played back on some systems with about VHS quality and another system like a copy of a VHS!

The dreaded Q word depends almost entirely on the end user. If I were you I would give a program like Eazy VCD a try and see for yourself. There's a guide here.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. "convert the VHS recorded DVD to VCD format":

VHS to DVD: you can put at least 4 to 6 hrs tape into one DVD-R/+R.

VHS to VCD: 2 hrs tape into one CD should be nice.

No way! VCD is almost 80 min on a 700 MB (80 min) CD. Lowering the bit rate will (besides making it a "XVCD" - an "out of specs" VCD) make it look really bad.

Now THAT is really true. I have one of these DVCD players that been popular in S.E. Asia. They play VCDs with lots of macroblocks, and stuttering towards end of disk is not unusual. I thought it was the disks that was bad, but when i played them in the pioneer DV444 it was close to perfect.

VHS to DVD: Negligable quality loss. DVD to VCD: Serious quality loss.
