It will run faster if you tweak it, and shut off the frilly icon fluff
Right! All the frilly little adjudstments it makes to the menus all the xp style stuff and all unnescessary services are cut off. Runs just fine, much more stable than 98 ever was.

  3. I used to run 768 MB ram, but had to steal 256 MB to repair another computer. Didn't notice any difference in performance on the first computer.
The only thing different was one program, After Effects. The 'Ram Preview' was about 5 seconds shorter.
If it works, don't fix it.

I was running WinXP on an AMD K6 300Mhz with 64mb Ram. It was slow, but still good enough for what it was used for.
Now I've got an Athlon XP 2500+ with 1gig Ram. I would never go with less than 512mb.
Unless, the only thing that the PC will be used for is wordprocessing and
    e-mail.

Like I said before, it depends on what you want to do. You don't need 2 gig of ram when all you do is e-mail and surf the net. Power users need more. I do videowork on both my computers.

    My duron system has 512MB
    My athlon xp has 256MB

Just stick with what works for you

I have installed xp on many systems with 128MB

I've run my system on 256 for awhile now but I do notice that it struggles when I'm video editing/encoding etc etc - I'll be upgrading to 512 just to take the pressure off.

I guess in the end it depends what you use you pc for.

  7. Go with 512M.... you will noticed a lot less Disk Swapping.

I've read that 1G of memory is causing some anamolies with certain installs.
