  1. This is why we laugh at these pathetic reviews done by people who don't really know what the heck they are talking about. My goodness! How do these magazines make any money when they're all staffed by idiots?

1/ The Plex does NOT belong in that top position. People complain about LiteOns being picky with media? Well, guess what? The Plex is so much worse. And it also has this tendency to die; there are people who have had to RMA their Plex multiple times already. If the LiteOn _11S series was a mistake, the Plex was an even bigger one. And not to mention bloody epensive.

2/ The LiteOn 811S is plagued with problems. Where is the 812S or the 851S? Either of them can whip the 811S in performance.

3/ The TDK, Pacific Digital, and Alera drives that were used are all rebadged 8x LiteOn drives (either 811S or 851S). So how come they didn't share the #2 spot with the other LiteOn? Did the reviewer even know that they're all the same?

4/ A rebadged NEC made it to 3rd place. That's about the only good thing the reviewer did. He probably just got lucky with the placement of that one.

5/ WTF is the Pioneer doing in last place?! Oh, and the Memorex in 7th place is also a Pioneer 107.

6/ The HP is a clone of the BenQ. And the BenQ most certainly doesn't deserve that high of a rating. At least not more than Pioneer (Vanderlow, our resident BenQ fan, will probably disagree with me here).

7/ Did I mention that PC World doesn't know what they're doing? Well, lemme mention it again.

I got a Plextor 708A drive with no problems. I had more problems with the cheapy Liteon 411s drive. Plextor recommends the brands of media they support. People that want to use cheap media then Plextor isn't the one to purchase. I only bought the Liteon 411s because it was cheap. I get better burns and writing quality with my Plextor than the Liteon. I've only had [/b]ONE[/B] coaster with my Plextor 708A drive because it was MEMOREX CMC DVD+R media. We all know CMC is crappy media. I've had so far 8 coasters using the Liteon drive. I used the Zebra mod to upgrade it to a 811s and have the speedhacking tool and auto bitsetting. In my short experience with the Liteon drive most of the discs I burned would not playback on some standalone dvd players. But yet I can burn the same movie on my Plextor and it will playback flawlessly on any standalone dvd player. Go figure eh!

  3. That's funny you should mention that CMC +R media being crappy...I have burned over 85 backups with these "crappy" medias on my CHEAP NEC 2500 with not one, nada, zero, coasters...

  4. LOL, I love that. It's such a great and top-notch burner that it'll only burn premium media. Funny how people can get away with saying that about the Plex but can't get away with saying that about the Liteys (because Liteys suffer from the same problem--does great on good media, sputters on bad media). I've never owned a Plex, actually, but after browsing forums and reading what people have to say, I got the impression that a lot of Plex owners were disappointed. *shrugs*

How about you check www.nomorecoasters.com to just see how well your CMC dvd media ranks. CHEAP is the WORD FOR NEC!

Liteon couldn't even burn correctly on FUJI (TAIYO YUDEN) DVD-R & MAXELL DVD-R! Yet the PLEXTOR drive burns flawlessly with them. gO fIGUrE! And yah I know the Liteon drives cater to DVD+ media.
Oh! lookie what I found at the Liteon forum regarding burning TY DVD-R!

By all means use Cheap media cuz I'll have the last laugh when the cheap media won't playback correctly in the years to come eh! " TO EACH'S OWN"

  6. Settle down BUDZ...I really don't give a rat's ass about nomorecoasters.com reviews and/or recommendations. I was only giving my opinion. That's what a forum is man!! In fact the "2nd Class" Riteks gave me all kinds of problems, so I switched to the Memorex and haven't had any since. And IF in a couple of years my 90 CENT backups quit working I'll make another backup, and another...

I may be mistaken, but I was under the assumption that NEC was one of the TOP dvd writers as far as write quality goes?? Am I wrong on that?? LEt me know

    Anyway have a Wonderful day!!!!!!

  7. I have a PX-708A and it has burned anything I've put in it. Even crappy Admeco brand media. I don't know why everyone else is having trouble burning cheap disks. I wouldn't trade mine for anything else right now.

sounds like this is the place to ask this question....

I have the TDK 440 burner. (wife gave it to me for Cristmas) I never see it listed on the sites that have firmware upgrades to better performance. Is this drive really just a copy of a diferent make?

You can find out by visiting http://www.rpc1.org/

If you go to "download firmwares," that section of the site will list what your drive is a rebadge of, if it is.
