  1. Hi guys,

My brother has a problem with his new PC. Since he built it, the audio port on the rear of the machine has always given a very tiny signal. The headphone port at the front is fine, just the rear one.

I have checked all the normal audio properties - it's set to two speaker stereo and all the levels are at maximum. What could be the problem here - maybe a damaged audio port on the motherboard?

    Thanks for any advice,

    Cobra

EDIT - Should have said that his motherboard is an Asus A7N8X-X.

  3. Does it have the latest nForce unified driver set? In the newest version nVidia has some kind of mixerr utility with lots of settings to mess around with...

I assume you've already tried the obvious (mute, spkr volume, pc volume). Maybe check Asus forums for similar problems with that board?

I've seen that happen when the insulating washer on the underside of the MB was left off. The aluminum mounting posts that the screws go into shorted traces on the backside of the board. This is especially common with DYI machines.

  5. Thanks very much for your replies. I just thought I'd let you know that we're sending it back for a replacement - the motherboard audio must be duff.

    Thanks again,

    Cobra
