Hi all, I recently downloaded a movie which came as 2 VCDs, but I wanted to burn the movie onto a DVD. Firstly, I extracted the MPEGs using VCDGear and continued to encode them using TMPGEnc. However, when I loaded the extracted Mpegs into TMPGEnc Plus, it said that the file was unsupported . I tried Ulead Movie Factory 3 instead, which had no problem with the files, but when I joined them, they came to greater than 4.5GB, yet unjoined, they were less than 2gb.

I'm hoping that I can join the files using TMPGEnc in MPEG Tools, but why is it not accepting the MPEGs? If I'm unable to get past this obstacle, I suppose I'll author the files using Ulead and then shrink them to DVD size using DVD Shrink afterwards, but I would lose a lot of quality this way.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to why TMPGEnc isnt accpeting these files?

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks all.

  2. Why duplicate your actions?
Extracting them with VCDGear should produce the compliant mpeg. Re-encoding in tmpgenc isn't going to fix anything, and won't work, unless you have the mpeg plugin for it.
You say these are VCD, yet they turn out larger than 4.7 gig once joined. Am I missing something here?
If they are VCD, 352x240 is a valid dvd resolution/aspect. Why not just author the mpegs produced by VCDGear?
If they are not compliant, run them back through VCDGear with the "Fix Mpeg" checked. Author and burn.
If they are VCD (1150kbps), why attempt a re-encode to DVD size/bitrate? The quality isn't going to get any better.
    Cheers, Jim

What kind of audio is on the VCD's? TMPGEnc can have a problem with some formats. If you are going to author the two files to DVD, it's better to put the two files into the authoring program and it will let them play one after the other, seamlessly. Combining them before authoring can sometimes result in sync problems.

lol, i didnt realise tmpgenc dvd author allowed mpeg-1s to be used to create a dvd! anyway, i tried opening the mpeg file and i got this error msg:

The video GOP is too long.

For a standard DVD it is necessary that the GOP fulfill the following condition:

Max 36 fields (18 frames) (NTSC format only)
Max 30 fields (15 frames) (PAL format only)

love to b able to say i understood this... can ne1 help?

Yes your GOP is too long for DVD, but you should be able to click on Ignore and carry on though.

ok, i tried importing the mpeg, with both ulead moviefactory 3 and tmpgenc dvd author and with both, the audio and video gradually moved out of sync. I've tried demuxing the audio from both original mpegs, which were present in each vcd, encoding these to .m2v and re-muxing them using tmpgenc, then authoring that way using two seperate movies but the sync problems still occured. i tried encoding both original mpeg files with the audio using tmpgenc to mpeg-2s, and authoring them as seperate movies but the sync problems were clear again. i have also tried joining both mpeg files using 'easy video joiner', giving me a larger mpeg file with audio. however, strangely when i directly author this file, i end up with the first half of the movie perfect, with no real audio sync problems, yet the second half of the movie plays its first chapter over and over again until the end of the movie! however, when i play the mpeg i have joined before i try to author, it plays perfectly the whole way through, without any loss of sync!

Ultimately i would like to create a dvd which has no audio or video sync problems . any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks all

I've only just started authoring DVD's myself but a half way decent understanding of VCD authoring has helped me a great deal.

Check the running time of both your audio stream and your video stream. If the running times don't match, use Goldwave to shrink/expand the audio running time to match the video.

is there a program which will tell me the exact running time of my audio and video streams? i mean down to like 1000ths of a second?

also, does goldwave allow a free trial program which will actually let me shrink or expand the audio stream to the exact length? or is that feature only available if u have paid for the product?

You don't need that much accuracy. Virtualdub will tell you the running times of the video stream and Goldwave will tell you the running time of the audio.

Goldwave is trialware for about 30 days IIRC. Now be a good little Cardiffian and read some guides

this program's amazing! after i had "time warped" the audio stream to the legnth of the video stream (btw it was the length of the second video clip's audio stream which was incorrect), goldwave even gave me the option of saving it as a 6 channel .wav (just to name 1 output audio format of about 50). that doesn't actually mean u could get 6 channel analogue sound from it could u? if it does, id even give my mum away for this program! (maybe )

thanks for your help neway mates, ill c if i get the same audio sync problems after this little beauty's been authored
