  1. hello all, I have been using LG GSA 4040B for a while but now i wanna upgrade to an 8X writer (where is the 8X media? hehe)..so i wanna get some reviews on the new LG 4082.. Is this a good writer? any problems with +/- writing, etc? OR is there a better writer like Lite-On?

  3. Well, it's not what you want to hear but I can totally recommend the Pioneer 107. I have had nothing but a perfect experience with mine and I have read nothing that would convince me otherwise. I used Ritek, Optodisk, and Prodisc.
Still a few bugs in the system...

You seem to be asking the same as I was yesterday!

I've opted for the Pioneer and so far, it seems very good. Flashed the Firmware from 1.10 to the latest and it lets me burn 4x discs at 8x.

I didn't use the DVD-RAM on my old drive, so I don't think I'll be using it in the near future, unless of course I get a DVD-RAM recorder standalone but, to be honest, there's bugger all worth recording from the TV!

Mine is the Pioneer DVR-107D bought from Mirodirect yesterday:

    http://www.microdirect.co.uk/productinfo.aspx?ProductID=5492

It came with the 1.10 firmware, but I flashed it to 1.13 from this site:

    http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/

I bought a pack of Infiniti 8x DVD+R's to test it, but had a few grey coloured Datawrite Classic 4x DVD-R and some red coloured Bulkpaq Generation 4 4x DVD-R which have both burnt at 8x with no problems.

The grey Datawrite discs (bought from www.scan.co.uk) have always been good for me, less than one failure in i'd say a hundred discs.

The red Bulkpaq have not been as good, about five failures in a pack of 25. They were bought for me though, I wouldn't have chosen them myself. Infiniti's have also been good to me. My first box was 1x but they almost all burnt at 2x without failure on my 2x LG recorder.

  8. Thanks alchemistresearch ..Nice reviews on this drive.. Few questions: Is this the latest drive from Pioneer right now? when should we expect a dual layer version in the market for cheap? have you Tried Optodiscs on your drive? If not..what Media you recommend..i wanna taste some 8X writing .. I'll be using DVD Xpress, DVD XCopy, DVD Shrink..

and do you recommend any better software for backing up dvds?

    many thanks

  10. If I were you I would look at a dual-layer writer, or better yet hold off for a few months until DL becomes more established, as DL burning is very new and is bound to have growng pains.

If you just buy a regular 8X burner now, you will have to buy yet another burner if you want to burn DL (8.5 GB) discs. There is no DL media out yet, but if you're in the market for a new burner anyway it doesn't hurt to look at DL drives. They are rather expensive compared to normal 8x drives, though.

I agree with you, but the dvd technology is so god damn slow .. that you hardly see any 8X media in the market.. DL media and DL cheap drives are still far away.. prolly at the end of this year... I do a lot of dvd burning so i really need to upgrade my LG GSA4040B.. can't wait to get my hands on a 8X burner :P ..

Do you have any comments on the Pioneer 107D bruner?

    many thanks

Where are you chaps based? Here in the UK, 8x media is quite easy to come by. A spindle of 25 costs us around £16. I even saw a spindle of 25 2x for just £6!

I don't own one, but you'll find many comments about this burner here.

The A07 and 107 are exactly the same hardware, except that the A07 ships with OEM firmware (less supported) and the 107 with retail firmware (much more supported). Hacked firmware has been developed that can turn most OEM drives into their retail equivalents.

Vancouver, Canada here 8) ..To be honest i have never seen 8X media advertised or being sold on any Canadian website/shop .. 25 DVD-R spindle retails for $19.99 here + 15% bloody tax(VAT in UK?)
