DVD to mpeg/avi...

I guess people got bored with this topic, but I'm still not done.

So, I can create an output file, that is 204mb, but the quality is not great.

So, I know how to cut out the sections I want, set the save box to 720x480, and get a good quality video, high quality sound mpg at 204mb for 10min.

But I want a dvd quality video and sound at 720x480, and have it be about 10-15mb per 1min of clip.

I have been partial to mpg's because I will post these vids to a website, and I haven't figured out how to Capture a reference frame in avi mode. But at this point, I will use an avi format if it gives me what I want. I will figure out the capping later on.

I keep telling you dude, it's not going to happen in an mpeg. With that size you'll be lucky to get somewhere between VCD and SVCD quality, and even with that there's still no way you'll be able to perserve 720x480.

Do you mean that you just need to extract a single frame? All you have to do is open the avi with Virtualdubmod, go to Video>Snapshot source frame. PNG probably has the best compression, or you could save as BMP and convert to JPG using your photo editor.

The best resolution I have seen in mpg is 640w x 352h, and the was with VHS quality, and 22.6mb for 1 1/2min of clip, so I guess I know why now. Oh well.

Ok, so how can I get what I want in an .avi format?

I am already "pretty" comfortable with cutting clips with Virtuadubmod, but what else do I need to do?

There are quite a few guides here and at doom9.org on how to convert to Divx. Is there any reason why it has to be 720x480? It can look just as good with a slightly smaller resolution. Stick to Dr. Divx for now while you're learning about Vdub and Divx. I'll be glad to help with specific questions but try and get things started on your own first.

Well, firstly,I not real keen on Divx because only my Divx player can play those files and the player annoys me. Secondly, I want 720x480 (or better) because I want the highest resolution I can get with the biggest display size possible. Dr. Divx is only a fifteen day trail with about twelve days left, and as I said, I not a fan of Divx. What about xVid or another.

I have made a few clips in avi so far that are not bad, but the lack the clarity of dvd.

I am a bit of a perfectionist, so I want to be able to do this with the best possible results, as cheaply as possible.

Specific questions:
1: Which of the avi compressors offers the best quality overall?
2: What is a reasonable size for a 720x480, 2min clip?
3: Is there a way in media player classic to adjust video disply quality, like brightness and contrast?
4: Is there a way to have Divx open new files in the same player window?

Probably XviD. Another option is Nero Digital(when using Nero Recode 2). It actually uses a .mp4 container, not avi.

A bitrate of at least 2000kpbs, which is around 16mb per minute. You should get yourself a bitrate calculator, or use the DVDRhelp Bitrate Calculator. You can use the Divx type.

I don't use WMP, I use Zoom Player. It's pretty easy with that one, just right click and select "color controls".

You mean two videos playing in the same player? I don't think so. You'll probably need to open two different instances of WMP.

What exactly have you tried that you were unhappy with(besides Dr. Divx)? You don't really need to buy anything, just refine your method. It's kind of hard to help with that when I don't know what your work process was. All you really need is the latest XviD codec and Virtualdub MPEG2(or Virtualdubmod).

Actually, WMP can do this. We use the WMP SDK and create our own player out of it. After the first file is in the player, we drag and drop x number of other clips into the window. I have had as many as 24 clips playing in the same instance of WMP! It cannot be done natively just by drag/drop in WMP, but with some programming......kinda cool to have that many clips in the same viewer.

As far as the Divx player opening a new file in the same window, all I meant was when I open a new file, it doesn't pop up a new player, but stops the playing file and starts the new file.

Thats all. Can Divx player do that?

I'm not really sure how you configured your encode so I just have to guess. I now that with Dr. Divx we discussed determining output quality by file size but things are a little different with Xvid. Though you can set it to create a desired file size, I find it's best to plug in an actual bitrate instead. For 720x480 I wouldn't use any less than 1500kbps. Another thing, it would be helpful to know what audio bitrate you are using. It's the combined video and audio bitrates (along with the video lenght which you have specified already) that determine the final size. Another thing, did you do a 2-pass encode? You should if you haven't done so. Single pass mpeg-4 looks pretty lousy.

As for your other question about WMP, I can't really answer that one, as I don't use that player anymore.

So far, I just pick a comressor and filters and save the file with defailt setting. I don't know how to change settings to get what I am after, so I don't mess with it.

I will try your suggestions, but I've run into two snags.
1: When I try to set the encoder to a 2-pass encode, I can't enter a bitrate.
2: I tried to encode from a ripped dvd the other night, nad could not get the audio to sync up.

Constructively speaking, I just read through this entire thread and it appeared to me that you are struggling bigtime to see any progress. I think this is a combination of a lack of skills on your part and a lack of guidance from this side of the fence. Congrats to teegee420 who has stuck by you to this point. I don't want to cut teegee's lunch, but I have a method that may work for you.

In the meantime, I would suggest that you download the latest XviD Codec if you don't have it already. That way I can be sure my instructions can be followed.

When you set up the first pass and save as avi, make sure you click "don't run this job now, add to job control...". There's really nothing special you have to do to set up the first pass other than having "two pass- first pass" selected. For the second pass, select "two pass- second pass" and make sure you're able to plug in a bitrate like this:



Plug in at least 1500kbps as I previously suggested just so you can see if you're happy with the quality. You might even want to only encode a short clip just so you can determine if that bitrate is acceptable to you. Make sure you add the second pass to job control as well. Lastly, go to File>Job Control and click "start". Post your thoughts on how good you perceive the quality to be.

I already have the newest Xvid codec, and this is what i'm getting. I saved the first pass, and went to save the second and saw these.




So, I can choose a total size, but not a bitrate on the second pass? I think we may be using different versions of Virtuadubmod. I have 1.5.10.

I have one more question on this topic. I never found out if I can open new movies in a Divx player thats starts after the other movie stops. So, with that, does any other player play Divx encoded movies correctly? All my player that CAN play Divx start a few seconds late, or have this weird green encoding at the beginning.

What video bitrate did you use ? bump it up 500 and see if that makes a difference.
