Of course, I wouldnt buy this. :P

Just thought Id post it if anyone was fixing to buy an 8x dual in the next few days, heres a chance to go 12x. I know BenQ and others are skiping 12x and going to 16x and dual layer/double layer is out and blah blah.

    Artec?

I'd love to see just how crappy the quality is.

Sorry, I don't have much love for Artec and their products (being a former owner of Artec hardware).

I don't think Artec makes their own drives. What rebadged kind is this? I used to think Artecs were made by Accesstek (Optorite) but at 12x, I doubt it.

    It says:
    Writing Format
    [DVD]
    DVD Video, DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, DVD-18, DVD+RW 4.7GB, DVD+R 4.7GB, DVD-RW 4.7GB (closed session), DVD-R 4.7GB
    [CD]
    CD-DA, CD-ROM XA (m1, m2f1/m2f2), CD-R, CD-RW, Bootable CD, Photo CD (single & multi-session), Video CD, Super Video CD, CD-Extra, Mixed-mode CD, CD-Text, CD-Graphics

So with DVD-18, it is more than just a Dual Layer DVD Writer! Blue Ray?

DVD-18 in an acronym that means a two-sided DVD disc with two layers of data on both sides of the disc
DVD-18 disc can contain upto 15.9 gigabytes of data on it (with 7.95 gigabytes on each side).

thats what a dvd that has full screen on one side and widscreen on the other is on

DVD-9 can hold approximately 7.95 gigabytes of data

DVD-10 means a two-sided DVD disc that hold single data layer on both sides

edit, the drive in question on this post isnt a DL drive, just dual format, meaning + and -

It says "writing" format DVD-9 and DVD-18, it must be a DL capable!

Capable of reading DL yes, but not writing. They have obviously messed up the specifications completely...

  11. F.Y.I.

As handyguy just mentioned, the NEC ND-2510A with dual-layer burning is out, and is selling under $100. Here's one place that's selling it.

    http://www.xpcgear.com/dvddvdrwdrives.html

Here's the spec for the NEC ND-2510A:

    Data transfer rate (Read)
    -----------------------------
    DVD: 12x CAV (max. 16,200 Kbyte/s)
    CD: 40x CAV (max. 6,000 Kbyte/s)

    Data transfer rate (Write)
    -----------------------------
    DVD-R: 8x (max. 11,040 Kbyte/s)
    DVD-RW: 4x (max. 5,520 Kbyte/s)
    DVD +R: 8x (max. 11,040 Kbyte/s)
    DVD +R9: 2.4x (3,300 Kbyte/s)
    DVD +RW: 4x (max. 5,520 Kbyte/s)
    CD-R: 32x (max. 4,800 Kbyte/s)
    CD-RW: 16x (max. 2,400 Kbyte/s)

    Media support
    ----------------
    DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW with 80mm and 120mm diameter

According to the specs, looks like the dual-layer burning is only for +R

    Cheers,

The last Artec drive that was purchased for work was a rebadged BenQ.

  14. I gopt this POS drive, its made by Artec themselves and dont support crap. Get the NEC 2500a and use Herrie's firmware to make it a 2510. Same drive except the firmware. Newegg h as the 2500 for around $69 or you can get the "Mad Dog 6-in-1" for about $50 after a mail in rebate as I did, it even still says NEC on the top of the drive.
