So i'm assuming a combo would be the best choice.
I've heard a lot of good things about the Samsung V1000.
Is this the one to go with, or should i look at something else?

We wanna go DVD but we have so many tapes. -
combos are always a bad choice if u have a problem with the unit......then u cant use any of the combinations...go for seperates

It's a bad idea. Samsung makes crappy DVD players...they make crappy VCRs... A combo unit will be twice as crappy.
An excellent quality DVD player, (Pioneer DV-343, I have the DV-434) cost about $139. You can get a decent VCR for $100. Depending upon how much you watch/record tapes, you could go cheaper (Symphonic 4 head HiFi VCRs sell for $69 on sale...I have this one.) or more expensive. If you plan on converting your tapes to VideoCD, then I'd recommend springing for a VCR that has S-Video output. You'll get higher quality results.
Regardless, I highly recommend avoiding combo units.

agreed!
hey sracer - saw your dvd/vcd listings - nice!!. how the heck did you manage so many DVDs at $0.00??? -
OT: DVD Prices
Well, most of those $0.00 were back in the days when online e-tailers had promotions going on, and sites like Vividence, FreeRide, Jaboom, FirstLook, etc. all gave away Amazon gift certificates for visiting their sites and sponsors. For nearly a year straight the UPS guy would visit at least once a week to drop off a "Free" DVD. It was awesome. But since the dot-coms went dot-bust, those days are gone.
As you can tell by the other links on that collection page, I've found alternative methods for growing my collection.
