problem using virtualdub for xvid

I want to convert a xvid file to put on a dvd,i've looked at the 'how to' guide posted on here which says i need to extract the audio first using virtualdub.
When i open the xvid file in virtualdub i get a message saying
"couldn't locate decrompresser for format 'XVID' (unknown)
Virtualdub requires a video for windows (vfw) compatible codec to compress video.Direct shows such as those used by windows media player are not suitable."

Can anyone help me please

Get the Xvid codec - under tools > codecs on the left.
