it encodes quicker than realtime at the moment. or do you mean decode DTS and re-encode to DD on the fly for people with non DTS capable amps? what's the most your amp will decode with DD anyway? 448kbps? 768kbps?

Well I haven't tried it yet so I can't give first hand knowledge, but from what I read it will now either decode DTS (and play it through the analog outs of the soundcard) or pass it through the spidif to your receiver. Previousely it only did this for AC3/DD.
As for encoding to AC3, say you have a multichannel Ogg or AAC file that you compressed from the original AC3 or DTS stream of your DVD. Now, after the ogg/AAC codec decodes it into 6 channels AC3filter will encode it into an AC3 bitstream so that it can be passed (via spidif) to your DD receiver. At least that is how I interprited it.
Don't know the max allowable bitrate for receivers.

Where is this beta? Is it the one made by the same ppl who make this one: http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/

Sorry, Valex posted a link to an RC2 on the 3rd page of the thread. I would suggest trying that one.
