  1. ...everything I encode is at least 10X fast. An 11 minute video ended up 1:12. The audio was fine, but the video sped right through.
I uninstalled and re-installed, same thing. Is it settings? I was using the presets. What am I missing?

    Thanks for any help...

    Tech stuff:

    12" PB 867 Mhz G4
    640 MB
    80 GB
    OS X.3.3

  2. I think I may have figured it out. Instead of exporting from FCP4 to .dv, I did it as a .mov.

Seems to be ok now, but has anyone tried to compress a .dv file in ffmpegX? (I'm sure...) Does it work for everyone? Is it something else I need to investigate?

    Thanks

I have the same problem. Also exporting from FCP in .mov format. In the beginning, I didn't have this problem at all and then I upgraded to latest verion and it appears. I reinstalled the oldest version, still the same. I use a 2 x 2 G5 and 1 Ghz Powerbook.

I used a DV PAL video - 25 fps - no sound encoding. Duration is 00:00:04.27 (quicktime get info).

When I encode a video into MPEG(avi - ffmpeg), DivX 3 (avi - ffmpeg), MsMPEG4V1 or V2 (ffmpeg), I got a speedup video with a duration of 00:00:00.28. The video is starting to encoding to something like 16-20% and then finishes quickly. Decode with quicktime option doesn't change anything...

When I encode with other codecs (including MPEG1 and MPEG2 from ffmpeg), I got no problem at all.

I'll try the export to .dv stuff and hope to have a result !

    .DV or .MOV.

Well to me, the .MOV doesn't work but the .DV does ! Go figure out ???
    Thanks for the idea !

I'm using FCE and when I export as a self-contained movie then I get the video faster than the audio problem when using the ffmpeg MPEG4 encoder. But if I export from FCE as DV then I can encode using the ffmpeg MPEG4 encoder. So same experience as Nimar. Strange.

Also like Nimar, if you choose to encode in MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 then either the MOV or DV formats work fine.

  6. The current ffmpeg engine has a decoding issue when the input movie is a .MOV file containing DV video.

For now, it will work normally if the .MOV file use another codec (like MJPEG A), or with a raw .DV stream.

mencoder and mpeg2enc engines will work normally with .MOV files containing DV video.

Here is my experience with a 26-second clip I exported from a FCE project in .mov format (File->Export->Quicktime Movie...->then made self-contained) and .dv format (File->Export->Using Quicktime Conversion->then choose DV Stream NTSC 48kHz).

Using the MPEG4 mencoder with a .mov file I get a file with video but no soundtrack (even if watching using VLC or converting using DivX Doctor II and then using QT; and in QT when I view movie properties there is no soundtrack to view properties of, so it seems that the sound isn't even being encoded).

Using the MPEG4 ffmpeg with a .mov file I get a file with video and audio but the video plays about 5x too fast so it finishes about 20% into the movie and the remainder is audio with no picture. I can take this audio and extract it and add it to the file above in QT Pro which makes the file above perfectly fine.

Using MPEG4 ffmpeg with a .dv file works perfectly fine.

Using MPEG4 mencoder with a .dv file gives a Failed result within moments of pushing the Encode button.

Try to set audio track to 1 instead of 0.

See my comments in the post above.

mencoder is unable to read raw .DV streams, only ffmpeg can do it.

Major, thanks for the suggestion about setting the audio track to 1 when encoding a .mov file using the mencoder MPEG4 setting. That corrected the problem of video but no audio.

I had read your prior post about the problem with ffmpeg and a .mov file. My post was more intended as a summary of the results with .dv and .mov files using the mencoder and ffmpeg MPEG4 encoders.

Prior to coming across ffmpeg, I was using the 3ivx D 4.5.1 encoder (available from within QT after installation) to create MPEG4 format videos. My experience is that the ffmpeg MPEG4 encoder produces much better quality video in the same file size (text more clear, for instance) and in less time. Thanks for a great tool!!!
