  1. How come nothing ever gets created in the audio ts folder? What kind of DVD's actually use this folder?

  2. DVD audio, aka audio-only DVDs.

  3. Oh, I guess that makes sense since the audio for video is always muxed together with movie.

It was one of those things they tried to plan for way in advance and it never panned out.

  5. Is this where SACD(audio) disks would store their info?

  6. SACD (super audio CD) is different than DVD-audio. I am not sure about the differences though. Look it up online somewhere.

The AUDIO_TS folder is for compliance with the DVD standard. This is where DVD Audio would go, if it were included on the disc.

Except that I think that whole compliancy issue is just a rumor. I mean seriously, probably 2/3rds of every commercial DVD that comes out these days lacks an AUDIO_TS folder. I think the rumor just started because, by default, alot of DVD authoring packages spit out an AUDIO_TS folder. So depending on what software any given studio used, we would end up with some commercial DVDs with that folder. So people just assumed that since it served no practical purpose on a non DVD-AUDIO disk, and yet it was still there on some commercial DVD-Video disks, that it must be required for compatibility on very old DVD players. I seriously doubt this is true, but it obviously it doesn't hurt anything to include it.

True, but there have been reports of people not being able to play a recorded DVD on a particular player brand without the AUDIO_TS folder present. I wonder if they have the same problem with this player with commercial DVDs without the folder, too.

My burning program (NERO) automatically puts the folder in. It takes up minimal space, so I always leave it in, just to be safe.

I agree with Adam about the rumour. Most DVD players don't even parse the file system for files. They just check the existence of a VIDEO_TS folder and if they do find one, they read the first blocks of the disk to obtain the VIDEO_TS.IFO file contents. This is why many DVD players that play MP3s from a CD will fail to play them on a DVD.

I think that the reason many people have failed to playback their DVDRs is that they may have recorded them as DVD-ROM or UDF, or whatever and just placed a VIDEO_TS folder on the disk.

DVD Video disks not only need the appropriate files, they also need them in a correct order. The IFO files contain pointers to absolute disk sectors and if the files are in the wrong order playback fails.

When recording a DVD Video with Nero, the AUDIO_TS folder is placed automatically in the project (along with VIDEO_TS). However, Nero allows you to delete the AUDIO_TS folder, but not the VIDEO_TS.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

The AUDIO_TS....ahhh. It is a secret plot by the CIA to capute information off your computer and to steal the thoughts of your mind.
