    is there anyway to get the video off a Hi-8 cancorder to PC or should i just leave this camcorder on the shelf and go out and buy a DV one?

    2 ways --

    capture it with a capture card or dv transcoder

    or


    put the tape into a digital 8 camcorder and transfer via firewire

    Only if the digital 8 camcorder supports Hi-8 analog format. Not all do. I think that most Sonys do.

    Right and, typically, the lower priced Sony D8 models are not backwards compatible (example = TRV460 is while the TRV260 is not).

    Go out and buy a TRV22 while they're still available and use its A/D passthrough feature.

    You'll end up with what is, IMHO, a nice miniDV camcorder (at a good price) for future shoots and the ability to transfer all your Hi8 stuff to your PC without much of a hassle.
