I am a newbie so I guess no question is a stupid question. I keep attempting to make copies of movies that are less than the 120 minutes that a DVD-R will hold. For some reason the main movie file is repeatedly too large to fit on one disk (according to my DVD Shrink software). Can anyone tell me why? I have compressed those that only needed a little compression.
For example, I have a movie in front of me that is 125 minutes long yet it is 6762MB large. What is the deal? Is there something I am doing wrong?
DVD Shrink shows only 4456MB is going to fit on each disk so this one is way too large.

I fear you have either missed the point of DVD Shrink entirely, or are doing something very wrong. For a 2 hour movie on a DL disk, 6762MB is pretty normal. In fact, if a two hour movie was encoded at the maximum permissible bit rate, it would not fit on a double layer disk.
You have two pieces of the puzzle so far. The original movie size (6762MB), and the amount of space available on a blank disk (4456MB). Third piece of the puzzle, which you seem to have missed, is the amount DVD Shrink will have to compress (SHRINK) the movie by in order to make it fit. That is what DVD Shrink does.
I suggest you read some the guides here https://www.videohelp.com/dvdbackup#6;30 to understand how it all works. -
To help clarify:
2 hours is not the amount that will fit on a DVD-R disk. Movies are made with different bitrates and it's the bitrate which determines the amount of time that will fit on a disk. DVD's can be made with any bitrate between 1,100 to 9,000 kilo bits per second (Kbps), which can vary the amount of time on a disk anywhere from 7 hours to just 1 hour. Bitrate to a large degree determines the quality, so commercial DVD's (which are typically dual layer) are normally above 5,000 kbps. So don't be surprised if videos of the same length are different sizes and some require more shrinking than others."Art is making something out of nothing and selling it." - Frank Zappa
