DVD to XviD Conversion

It's highly unlikely that a 2 channel source is encoded at 448 kbps. It's more likely its 5 channel audio. I agree. If you simply muxed your audio from the dvd using VirtualDub, it is identical bit for bit to your source DVD's audio.

Your latest file has 5.1 AC3 audio. The video aspect ratio is wrong though. Just eyeballing it:

Good catch. It's too tall. Looks like it was cropped from DVD but not resized properly.

Anyone even thought about updating this guide, so it can coincide with the newer apps., or components the have came out, or have been updated, such as VirtualDub & Mod, Xvid 1.2.1., etc?

Its confusing trying to use this guide when it talks about using older apps for it.

There are no appreciable differences in the version of virtual dub used in this guide and the XviD 1.2.1 configuration appears to be the same as far as I can see. If you have any specific examples, I'll be happy to update it.

What about the DGMPGDec? I have the latest and greatest, and I wasn't too sure there either.

You said you were surprised about people using it? Ive been trying to find a more updated guide for this procedure, to no avail.

Is there now a better and more up to date way of way, other than this guide?

There are numerous guides, each with it's own merits, difficulties, and issues. You can try any of them that you like in the How To section. Just search for DVD to AVI in the How To.

Isn't this what the original Gordian Knot does?? (Not AutoGK)

Actually when this guide was created, Gordian Knot wasn't as popular as it may be now. It's also here for people that want to learn what happens behind the scenes with various tools.

There is no single 'best' path to get from Point A to Point B. Use what works best for you, be that Gordian Knot or whatever that may be.

Im lost when we get to the AVISynth steps. I installed it but I dont see any program or .exe its all just wierd files and plugins. I dont even know how to get AVISynth open. My guess is somehow the notepad program is now AVISynth or associated with it but I dont see how to use it. Can you explain it a little for me please?

AVIsynth is no program you run, you just make avs text scripts. http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Main_Page#New_to_AviSynth_-_start_here

Maybe you should use another dvd to xvid method....like AutoGK, Staxrip, Xvid4Psp. They do everything for you. 8)

I would but I wasnt a noob back in 2006 when I used to do this. I havent done it in about 4 years and forgot alot. Ive done nothing but hear about AVISynth since I started and I really wanna study it and get to use it because of the customization it gives you.

AVISynth is easy. Just open notepad, and put in the scripts for whatever guide your using, and save it as a script.avs. It should play in Media Player just like an AVI.

The most basic script is called Version()

I'd suggest you start there. There are also some really great guides for it in the guides section. It's a powerful tool, and one that is essential if you plan to do any serious time with video editing

If you get stuck, just post in the forums for help.

Do we have to keep all the files same folder (Pick a directory to place your project files, and save the project file in that directory. Call the file "DVD2AVI.D2V") files like movie.avs, dvd2avi.d2v, VTS_01_1.VOB.

Please clarify the directory for all the files we are going to make in the conversion process.....

Not sure about the MPEG2Source command, if that is still in use. Maybe you should read the wiki/documentation at avisynth.org.

For me, I dont create .avs files via notepad. I use DGIndex and MeGUI. Once I've created the .d2v file I load it in the Avisynth Script Creator of MeGUI and have a number of processing options (resizing, cropping, deinterlacing etc.). The output of such an avisynth script looks like this for me:

Your files don't have to be in the same directory, but it's easier if you do keep them in the same folder. If you do not, then you can just specify the path to files like your .D2V file like so:

MPEG2Source("C:\somefolder\somefile.d2v")

Your issue is not due to an invalid path. it is more likely due to an issue with your AVISynth install or a codec issue. Ensure you have the latest version of AVISynth installed and you should probably refresh your codecs. I'd suggest you try FFDSHOW Tryouts: http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/. It should be adequate for most decoding needs.

Not sure about the MPEG2Source command, if that is still in use. Maybe you should read the wiki/documentation at avisynth.org.

Thanks for your suggestion.....

I used the DGIndex and MeGUI to make the AVS Script and configured the XviD Encoder as per the Guide. And Finally made my first DVDRip using, DVD Decryptor, DGIndex, MeGUI and VirtualDubMod..

Although the quality is not upto the mark as i expected...But still i just got a feel of the whole process from DVD to AVI using XviD encoder....

I tested with AVISynth 2.58.

MPEG2SOURCE is still supported, and still works without issue. Your problem lies elsewhere.

This is a very old thread. So many things have changed since it started. I tried to follow instructions in #1 but lost way!
For example, MPEG2DEC3 Plugin for AVISynth (MPEG2DEC3.DLL) is missing or unavailable now.


Is there an update to this guide?

My sincere thanks to DJRumpy. This thread, about a decade ago, completely changed my approach to how TV is delivered in my house to my family. I am sorry to hear that you no longer use the Windows environment, as I still do, because it means there is one less knowledgeable and helpful person in the community.

You might try something a bit newer/different for your encoding, which is very similar in function to VirtualDub, but has natvie support built in for many input formats. i believe they also offer a windows version.
