    I'm assuming this DVR-1500 is a standalone DVD recorder. What you need to do is use a separate DVD player and pipe that into your S-video(or composite if you don't have s-video) input of the recorder. If it doesn't let you record, then it's a macrovision-protected DVD and you'll need a device to strip off the macrovision signal by putting it between the player and your recorder.
