Is it a bad card or is it overheating? I have only had the card for ~2months and have built a solid system around it working through quite a few hurdles, mainly recording from Dish Satellite. Following LordSmurf recommendation for Movies I have been caputering flawlessly for the last couple of weeks. All of a sudden the system is shutting down during capture. Crashed a several times after different run times, 2hr30min, 7min, 39min. I thought maybe CPU overheat, but have tested with a shutdown of ATI Mediacenter, challenging the CPU with another program at 100%, no shutdown. I thought maybe Sasser worm, but ran Microsofts search program, no worm. I thought maybe SPY/ADware, but ran a program to remove. Problem still exists. Need recommendations. The box is a Dell Dimension 8300, but I have added 4 HD, a new PowerSupply, already have a DVD-ROM and DVR+RW drive.

  2. After a crash is there anything in the event log?

    Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Viewer/System.

Also have you made any changes to your Bios lately?

It has gone a couple of days without crashing. Unfortuantely, I got too confident and tried to burn a CD while I was capturing. Monitor turned off, CD Burner light stayed on for another 20 seconds (made a coaster BTW.) I checked the event log and found the below error (scroll to bottom of message.) When I first bought this box, I had purchased the Dell Movie Studio Plus package. With beginer attempts at caputuring it was evident that there was an A/V sync issue. I tried to work with Dell customer support but eventually returned the contraption before my 30 day window closed. I suspect this Dazzle Mojave is the retail name for the Dell Movie Studio plus I purchased. This also leads me to believe that there is some residual references in my computer to this device that may be generating a conflict. I am not an registry editor, but I did find a Mojave reference in my registry. Can I just delete it? I feel like I am over my head now.

Can anyone help me with this issue? Is this why my card is crashing?

Also, I have not update my bios since first working through issues during the initial install a couple of months ago.

Is the mojave device or any unknown devices in your device manager? Control panel>system>hardware>device manager...probably under sound and video game controllers from here. If you find any reference to it or unknown device right click and select uninstall. Then go to your control panel>add/remove software and remove any software related to the Mojave particularly if it's a driver. Restart and make sure anything you uninstalled is still uninstalled, most likley any unknown device will still be there.

I'd also go into my startup config (go to the run prompt and type msconfig) and find any refernece to files associated with the Dazzle device, don't disable them from the sratup config. Look to the right and find out where in the registry that they are and delete them from there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run are where you should look for anything that shouldnt be starting up with windows.

Update! Went to check computer tonight and it had crashed again. I did a hard power down and upon restart checked the event log. Last entry 1:23am (NO Errors.) I scrolled down and did find the Mojave error 3 hrs earlier. Here is the kicker - I was not capturing at 1AM. I actually had just completed some Womble MPEG Wizard editing of previous captures around 11pm.

I am open to any troubleshooting advice.

I'm trying hard not to sound like a tech support person but why not do a fresh install of XP. That'll be $29.99. I already did one and my comp is only 6 months old. I installed a new graphics card and was having some weird display problems, the screen would resize off the viewable portion of the monitor, also had some issues with a 3-d animation program crashing.... Did you install the ATI over a previous graphics card installation? I was doing some reading and apparently some of these gaming gurus insist that they get better performance by reinstalling XP when installing a new card. I know one thing, you won't have the dazzle problem anymore.

You can try this too, go to control panel>administrative services>services (the ultimate start up folder, ever wonder why over 200mb of ram is used up on xp start up). Find the Dazzle services, double click it. Select the stop service button if it's running. Then from the drop down menu above the stop butoon select disable. Another thing you could try is removing the refernece from your registry for the dazzle, but be prepared to do a fresh install of XP. I doubt that if you remove that refernece you'll have any additional trouble but can't guarantee it.

I know that the AIW 9800 PRO cards run very hot, which gets them a lot of complaints. By the type of questions, I would assume that if it was shutting down from an overheat the log would show something, right? I really do not want to do a reinstall of XP, but will face the music if it is the logical answer. Tech Support: With a reinstall, do I just rewrite it back to the hard drive or do I need to remove it completely and then install again?

It's a little different for each comp depending on your manufacturer. If you use just the windows CD it's the same. I suggest you go to the dell site for specigic information on there systems. Following these instructions will completley delete everthing on your drive, files will only be recoverable using file recovery software providing they weren't overwritten during the installation process, in that case they are really gone.

Do a "windows xp clean install" search..... Couple of suggestions, when you get to the part where your asked to do a quick or full format pick full, by doing this you will truly have a clean install. Befor doing this I suggest you go get a copy of zonealarm at zonelabs.com and burn it to disc. After the install is complete the first thing you want to do is install zonealarm, don't go online before you do. Make sure all your peripheral devices are disconnected before installing XP. Once you have a clean install and zonealarm running fgo and update windows. Then go get the drivers for your hardware, at the very least you'll need the ones for the ATI. Windows installs a generic driver for it, you'l probably also need the one for your sound card. The rest will probably be automatically installed by windows. Last but not least after installing the drivers for the ATI and your soundcard look in device manager and make sure there is no unknown devices.

On a side note I had a ATI 9800 AIW and never had any problems like that, I used it more heavily than any game ever would doing 3-D animations. Some took as long as 12 hours. Now that I think about it my brother had similar shutdown problems. The heatsink fins for his processor were packed with dust, you might want to check that too.

  10. If the crashes do not corrospond with any particular program it could be hardware. (memory, hard drive...).

A complete reformat will go a long way to pinpointing the problem.
