Okay. Time to quit searching, and just ask.

Any suggestions for a cheap DVD-ROM drive (local pickup item, not online only) that can read DVD-RAM discs ?

  3. I'm fond of the Toshiba DVD-Rom.

Dirt cheap, and easy to find hacked firmware for Speed-Unlock / Region-Free. Models for IDE or SCSI. No +R or +RW.

I made a night trip to Fry's just now, and grabbed an LG that says "DVD-RAM" right on the box. Here's hoping it works.

    Thanks!

    Was $39.99 plus tax

  5. Just about every Hitachi dvd rom can read dvdram. These can be had used on ebay pretty cheap. Go for any others like Nec, Toshiba and ppl will actually bid above retail for it. The used hitachis will go for 10 dollars and less. You can buy a brand new rom but I don't see the point. You're just going to use it to read dvdram right?

  6. Is there ANY DVD-Rom that will read DVD+R / +RW?

  7. I also like a reader for DVD-RAM, just in case. I am planning to get a Pioneer 107D writer no matter what, and i read somewhere that it can read DVD-RAM? Is that correct?

    au7usa: I think most newer DVD-ROM will read both +R and +RW.

I've had it for a while, so I don't remember the model number. But the Lite-On I bought at WalMart reads Ram discs.

  10. Specs for all but one DVD-Rom i've found only lists DVD-R / -RW, not +R / +RW.

Can you give me an example? (not a writer)

  11. Looks like you are right au7usa, i looked at a few models at 2 norwegian computer web-shops, and many listed only -R and -RW, but it could be some of them still does read +R/+RW, need to look at the manufacturer websites to be sure. I found one, Plextor PX-116A/T3BPB, and another one (Teac) said +RW but not +R, i kinda doubt it would not read +R when it can read +RW, but ok... It was a Teac DV-516E anyway.

  12. So far this is the only DVD-Rom drive (not a writer) that can handle +R / +RW that i could find.

What's the model number of that drive? And did it work for reading DVD-RAM? If so, I gotta get it!

    LG GDR-8162B

Lists DVD-RAM on the back as a "compatible format".

It reads the discs, but not the files in Windows ME. I have to use ISO Buster to extract the UDF files.

Mine does, but at 2X and with a lot of problems at the edges of the media.
Still a few bugs in the system...
