  1. I have a Ulead Video Studio program, and it just isn't cutting it anymore, I need a new, more advanced video editor. I want a program that I could "paint" in or in other words, add gun shot effects (muzzel flashes) and do some slow-mo stuffin etc. Is there a good editor out there that I could afford? (under 100 bucks) I am only 14 and can not afford the bigger programs.

    Thanks

That's a tough one because Ulead Video Studio is probably the best in its price range. The more advanced editors like Adobe Premiere and Video Vegas will set you back a lot more than $100.

I've never used it but according to the tools section it costs $500. If you can afford that you might as well get Vegas 5.

Since you are 14, I will assume that you are a student and therefore eligibile to purchase Vegas 5 for the academic pricining, around $150 to $160. See, e.g., academicsuperstore.com.

  6. "Only 14"? I assume, then, that you're a "K-12" student and, therefore, would qualify for academic versions offered by certain s/w manufacturers.

For example, that $700-$800 price tag of Vegas+DVD gets knocked all the down to well under $300 for students. If you can swing around $270 or so, that's one heck of a deal.

Edit: looks like someone else had the same idea!

Both Vegas and Premiere are pretty much the industry standard and are preferred by professionals. There's a lot of support for these two products too. Ulead Media Studio is pretty much a slicked up version of Ulead Video Studio. It's been a while since I've played with it so maybe things have changed in current versions. Try doing a few google searches and see if you can find some thorough reviews of all these programs. Only you can decide what's best for you.

  14. I downloaded a trial version of Media Pro 7, and it looked like everytime I did something( for example, preview a clip) it would take up a lot of harddrive space. Does this happen on Vegas and Adobe?

and when they say "Professional" on every thing, is that what some professional film makers use?

It depends on how you set your output properties. If you output as DV you can expect to have about 13gb per hour of video. If that's too much, try a different compression type.

  16. I tried to download the Adobe Premiere Pro Trial version several times, and it didn't work, but I would really like to try it. Does the Premiere 6.0 still dominate all other programs (examples: vegas, ulead etc.) even know it's not the 7.0 or Pro?

I couldn't really answer that. I'm not even sure what kind of improvements have been made with the newer versions. Have you had a look at our Editing Forum? Head over there and you can find threads that discuss Premiere and Vegas in better detail than I can, including a Vegas vs Premiere thread.

  18. I downloaded the Vegas 5 Trial, and I would just like to say DAMN!!!!!! This is awesome, very easy to learn, but I could use some help on a video filter....I would like to get the look of a real movie, and I don't really see a filter that says "TV LOOKING FILTER" and I have tried to play around with different filters to make it look like the movies, but I can't seem to find the right one, is there a certian filter that I may have missed out there, that I can just apply to get the look, rather than have to screw around with all the filters?

when you buy vegas 5 , you get the magic bullet plugin , which gives all types of 'film look" and is used by very high end film studios ..

there is also a tv filter built in which has some old time film looks built in to it ..

Another possibility is to check out some of the hardware / software bundles available (I've dealt with videoguys). The software is often "lite" versions, but very capable for many things. If you are on a really tight budget, it might be worth it to buy hardware you don't really need just to get the software bundled with it.

    Yep!!!!

If oreo321123 really wants Vegas 5.0+DVD and is, in fact, a student, I think he's going to have a tough time beating a touch more than 200 bucks on ebay, to wit:

I could be wrong but I believe most people use Adobe Photoshop for that.
