I'm capturing nice AVI files from my old VHS tapes and I'm wondering what tool would be best to convert my AVI files straight into DVD files, ready for burning. Or is this even possible?

One-tool-does-it-all would be the nicest, and freeware would be great to find because I'm on a tight budget right now.

    Thanks for the input, Randy

The basic TMPGEnc encoder is free, and if you look to the 'Tools' to the left under 'Author', you should find a couple of authoring programs that are free. That's all you basically need to produce a DVD. You should be able to burn the result with Nero or another burning program.

Well you need an MPEG encoder.

The 2 most popular are TMPGEnc Plus and Cinema Craft Encoder aka CCE BASIC

Both are around the same price I think they are both about $60.00 each

CCE BASIC is the way to go but it is a bit harder to use YET you can get better results with it and it is much faster than TMPGEnc Plus

I use VirtualDubMod to edit my AVI captures. Then I import the edits into an AviSynth AVS script where I can control other things like cropping if need be and applying "video noise" filters such as Convolution3D ... this helps to "clean up" the image prior to feeding the video to your encoder.

    VirtualDubMod and AviSynth are free.

So really all you need to pay for is your MPEG encoder.

Havn't seen software that does this

But if you don't want to spend any money, then you might consider
Capturing strait to Mpg2 352x480 half D1 instead of AVI. This way you will not nead to purchase an encoder(CCE, TMPGEnc). You will have to check out what your software capture pragrams are capable of capturing.
