Probably the OS. I have that same problem with my external drive. Apparently XP needs to check the media and close it. Usually my flash drives don't corrupt, but I still get warnings. My 10G external drive with my laptop gets screwed up regularly. (I get pissed when the OS says "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped right now.' Try stopping it later. Later is apparently never, at least as far as I can tell. (No, I want to stop it now. Rip out plug, don't give a shit.) Most of the time no problem. Sometimes I have to run scandisk on the drive. This is a fault of the OS on not releasing the drives. Sometimes it works, most of the time it won't release them.

  4. Shut down the computer, remove the jump drive, restart.
If it works, don't fix it.

The laptop doesn't always shut down when the drive is still connected, although the last time I reformatted the laptop, it will shut down, just takes an extra minute.

Why have a warning for usb attached memory? It seems it would be worse pluggin it in(power surge) than unplugging it.

When you plug it in there's a delay as Windows interrogates it and applies power. Presumably there's a certain sequence to powering up and down. When you ask to remove it, it removes power first, then flashes the window saying it's OK.

I don't know why pulling it out could hurt it, since I've never hurt one by yanking it (poor choice of words).

it doesn't, but windows (XP) moans and bitches. my machines at work will not then recognise it if you plug it back in until you restart them. 2000 works beautifully.

Whenever I get that message, I picture the freckled hand of Billy Boy reaching out and slapping my hand, scolding me for doing something he doesn't approve of
