  1. I've got a finepix M603 digital camera with 15 mins of high quality video recording function (using 1GB card). I can hook up the camera to the TV and see them in their original high quality form. However, I obviously want to make copies to keep so I put some on a CD-rom. When I tried to play them on my DVD player (yamada 6600) I couldn't. I then made a VCD and that played fine but with a very noticeable loss in quality. I thought my DVD player was supposed to play AVI files-what can I do?

As you only have 15 minutes worth of footage, try converting it to SVCD (or even MiniDVD if you player can handle it). The quality will be much better because of the larger frame size and higher bitrate.

  3. Will I get a bitrate of anywhere near 1140kbps if I convert it to SVCD? And 30 fps? Still can't understand why my player won't play the original file- I'm pretty sure it's played others before

See What is SVCD at the top left. 480 x 480, 29.97 fps (NTSC or 480 x 576, 25 fps for PAL) at up to a bitrate of 2500 kbs.

  5. I've tried loading the file on to TMPGC-enc to make the SVCD but it won't load- says it's an illegal stream
Are there any other free encoders I can try?
