    So now that the actual Release version of DirectX 8.1 is out (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33687&area=search&ordinal=1) is the 'Video Capture update for DirectX' still needed?

    No it isn`t. Taken from the directX page

    "Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0

    Note: this update is not applicable to Windows XP (DirectX 8.1 is built in) or DirectX 8.1 downloads. All required files have been updated and included in those releases."
