i have some video i want to back up by putting them on data dvds would it be wise to use 4x? or should i stick with 1x?

Right. Love it how so many want something but won't make any effort towards receiving it. I have dial-up, too.
1x? 4x? How about 2x? If your disc and recorder support 4x writing, go for it. If you're worried about it, spend the extra time and write at 1x. -
if we reply to your email personally how does the masses get benefit from the solution.
if your concerned about it use 1x but i think 4x would work fine as well -
if you have a decent burning program, burner and the media's up for it, use 4x... if your not too sure about 1/any/all of the above... do it at 2x... should be fine
