  3. options are....nec or pioneer, or maybe lite-on.

if you want bitsetting, then nec, if not, and you can spend more, then pioneer....

i own a nec for 1 year, and love it....

I have owned a Pioneer 105 for a year and burned over a 1000 DVD's with only 25 coasters. I used only Ritek Media. Then I decided to purchase a Pioneer 107, and so far have burned 250 Ritek's and 100 Prodisc with no coasters at all. So I really like the Pioneer's. I only use DVD-R media.

    Hope my 2 cents helps.

I have a Hp300i dvd+ burner.....have used it to make over 150 dvd back ups, and many cds, without a single error, or problem issue. Bought for $300 just under 2 yrs ago.

  6. Get a BenQ DW822A. You get officially support dual layer in Sept. and bitsetting now and the quality and speed is superior to most. It can do a number of 4x brand DVDrs at 8x. Go with this one if you can live with mainly sticking to + although it will do - .

  7. Get the NEC, it has dual layer firmware NOW that is FREE and burns great.

from what I read there isn't any dual layer media out so how can you say it's great. read this thread: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=221023

I agree with gitreel buy what you can afford. Remember that every dvd burner has their pros and cons. No one burner is the greatest and there are many variables when authoring, backing up and burning dvds.

I say it burns great with standard DVD+-R and CD-R. True, there is no DL media available en masse, but if you read the test on CDRInfo, they got great results. The DL firmware also sets the drive to RPC1 and removes the rip-speed lock. And it's one of the least expensive burners around, last I checked it was less than $80 @ newegg.

  11. Is it true that the Pioneer DVR107D has problems with cd audio extraction at the end of cd ???
I see that on a test of the pioneer DVR107. Maybe the last firmware corrects this problem.

  12. Don't use it for ripping so would not know, don't want to knacker the laser.

  14. i've got the 107. no problems with it. i have a friend who has the nec - he says that's very good. as someone said earlier - let your budget decide - there's no real difference at all. both write dvds and cds with equally viewable results.

For -R media, both the NEC 2500 and Pioneer A07 are great choices.

If you plan on using +R media also/only, I'd opt for the NEC 2500 with the bit setting firmware (hack), or the above posted HP 8x DVD+/- drive. The HP drive is an NEC, with HPs own tuned firmware, which supports bitsetting without the need for a hack.

BenQ and Lite On are both releasing new drives real soon, if not already. These are 12x (12x +R/8x-R) models, and +DL models (2.4x +DL, 8x +/- R)

Don't get an Optorite cause it may be a pain in the ass. If you are very cheap however, it is an option.

    I've owned Lite-On 811S, 851S, Pioneer 104, 105, NEC 2500.

My choices for quality burns with most media would be Pioneer or NEC. I wouldn't use either one to read or rip, for that use a DVD-ROM.

That's why I say it may be a pain in the ass. I realize that my problems may be unique. And even people with the most expensive drives like Plextor and Pioneer sometimes run into lots of problems. But from personal experience, I doubt that I would buy my Optorite drive again. It works fine now but I did have nasty installation difficulties and other issues. Plus no bitsetting, and with the price of good DVDR media nowadays, buying special CD-Rs for HD Burn is something that I may ultimately never get to.
