I hope this is the right place to ask this-- I picked up a 5 pack of Fuji "up to 4X speed" DVD+RW discs during OfficeMax's 25% sale this week but can't find much evidence one way or another that the Sony DRU500A can burn these properly. There's the big warning on Sony's page to NOT use 4x DVD-RWs, but nothing about +RWs.

I see this media has been reported to work by 2 different DRU510A users, which I am thinking is a weak thumbs up for the 500 (wasn't the 510A basically just the 500A with the 4X DVD+R firmware?)

(I should add that I don't care so much if it can burn at 4X, I'm more concerned that it's safe to even put the disc in the drive!)

    Thanks for your help...

Don't fear putting the disks in the drive. Worst thing that can happen is to get a brand new coaster.

Yes, the 500A with the updated f/w could record at 4x on +R disks (even though the original specs didn't include this).

It appears the DRU500A and Nero 6 don't go well together. Several people, including myself, have had numerous problems with older versions of Nero, several versions of the DRU500A f/w and different disk brands.

The last Nero 5 updates fixed the problems. I got adventurous and upgraded to Nero 6 and couldn't burn at 4x (both +r and -r, even TDK media that I could perfectly burn at 4x - more than 100 disks). Reverted back to 5.5.10.54 and all is fine now...

I can even record on 4x DVD+RW media (but of course at 2.4x) while with Nero 6 the drive wouldn't even recognize the disks.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
