Ive had my Pioneer R105 for just over a year now (outside warranty) and i think its dead. I keep getting error messages in various apps (Stomp RM4.5, DVD decryptor, Nero, the lot basically) that are mainly power related but just started getting TOC errors (is this lens alignment issues?) and im going to order a new one. I would like to see if i could fix this so id be happy to open it up and mess about with it unless there really is a problem.
Setting are on DMA, running xp pro corp on a 2.8c p4 with 512 3200 ram. I thought it might be a power issue but my PSU is rated at 400w+.
I read somewhere that opening it up and cleaning the lens (yes im a dirty filthy smoker) was a good idea, was hoping maybe there was a guide somewhere i could follow.
Or if theres anything ive missed feel free to let me know.

A year is about right for a smoker and a 105.
I have written several posts about this very problem.
Take it apart and clean the lens and all will be right.
I have done several. It is not very difficult to do.
Hope it all works out for you doomy

and in the future, try to quit smoking. It will make both you and your burner last longer

I appear to have got it working, i opened it up, swabbed the lens and it all seemed very dusty in there but nothing id normally associate with cancerous cigarrettes. It will only burn in 2x mode at the moment but maybe thats just media related, i have been using Bulkpaq (i know) 4x Gen 4 DVD-R (orange with white inner).
The reason its annoying me so much is that i paid just over £200 for it brand new and its not been used excessively, maybe 200 odd burns and now they selling for £70 at much faster speeds. Ill be getting a new one anyway, any reconmendations on next buy? Its mainly for Xbox usage and im not too fussed with speed tho i must say that burning at 4x is nice.
Basically a very reliable, smoker proof (giving up is not an option atm. STRESS!) decent burner at no more than £100 please.
Also thanks for replies. -
Yo! Doomy
I sympathise with the can't quit smoking option.
I have tried every concievable means of escape and it keeps
sucking me back in.
After cleaning my 105 for the 3rd time, I started hanging a piece
of plastic from the top of my computer so it covered my burner.
I have to lift up the plastic to insert or eject a disc, but it prevents
the cooling fan from pulling the smoke across the drive.
I did purchase another drive. A nec 2500a. I am very pleased with
its burning capability. They have just released a hacked firmware that
allows it to burn dual layer media. Kinda cool.
Just something to think about.
Hope you sort it all out.
