  1. When I play back some mpeg files they have the wrong duration. File is 200megs, but the size of the mpeg according to the playback program is only saying about 32secs.

I know the movie is bigger because when you get the the end of the 45 seconds the video stops but the audio continues. Also if you skip ahead via the scroll bar you can see bits of the movie that occurs after that initial 32 sec mark. I hope this is clear enough.

I noticed this problem long time ago. This happend with only a few files.

And one more thing: File playback without any problem after clean install of Windows XP, duration vas something about 25 minutes. Then I have installed MainConcept MPEG Encoder and same file become to 32 sec short. After 32 sec of file played, video freeze and audio continue... I tryed uninstall MainConcept MPEG Encoder - problem has gone. But this is not solve the problem, couse I need MainConcept MPEG Encoder.

As far, as I understand, after installing this encoder, Windows playback mpeg files with new one encoder-file, what comes witn MainConcept? Can I change it somehow? Or some otherworkaround?

  2. Install Mainconcept, then re-install the WMP codec pack from MS.

  3. I tryed every codec pack, from Microsoft's page above, but this mpeg still remain only 32 sec. When I load this file to VirtualDub, it become to normal lenght, but come window with many warnings. They looks like:

"MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in audio stream 0 at byte position 4142 (may indicate improper join)"

I understand, that this file crewed somehow, but still wonder, why after clean windows install I can watch it normally... But not after I install some video editing software

  4. The video editing software you are installing is probably also installing a codec or two. These newer codecs are not allowing it to play properly.
A couple of ideas. Unregister the mainconcept mpeg codec and re-register whatever was there before and see if Mainconcept still works. Or, Demux the files in Womble and try it with independant streams. Or, run the mpegs through VCDGear and see if that cleans them up.
If these are avi's, see if you can re-encode to a different codec in virtualdub, or frameserve to Mainconcept (the new beta version will take frameserve from virtualdub).
