  1. I have a couple of avi files that the quality are distinctly dodgy

Can I clean them up in Virtualdub so that the quality is much better or am I wasting my time

Is ther another program that will do the trick if Virtualdub wont ?

  2. If virtualdub won't do it, not much else will.
There are tons of video editing apps, all promising to do magical things. They all do what vdub does, but with a fancier gui.
Check out the filters in vdub. I regularily use brightness/contrast, sharpen, and HSV adjust, especially on questionable quality downloads.

You might want to play with the Temporal Smoother filter too.

You're going to have to use the preview and adjust to your own tastes.

  6. I find that sharpen more than 20 is useless.
Bright no more than 5%. Contrast to taste.

The frame merger filter is a good general purpose filter for non-interlaced video.Available from
    http://www.geocities.com/gc_timsara/vdub.html
It is a modified temporal smoother.
