  1. I downloaded a small avi file. As soon as I went to play it, my computer went all slow on me. The file wouldn't play on realplayer, so I used mclassic player. The file was not what I was looking for, and I tried to delete it. I got the "This file is being used by another person/application...." Blah blah!! Anyway, as soon as I highlighted the file, my PC went slow again. It wouldn't delete. I tried rebooting and going into DOS-prompt to delete it. It wouldn't. I rebooted again and was scanned it again just in case it was some kind of virus...nothing...spyware...nope. So I was lost as to what I should do. I tried using a file shredder application...nothing. Anyway, in the end I went into taskmanager and shutting things off...eventually, I shut one thing off that allowed me to delete the file. Can't remember what that file was, but now I am OK. Just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of thing happen or not?? Or any ideas as to what it might have been!?

This same thing happened to me yesterday. Boot in safe mode, then delete. Then reboot

There's a registry hack to fix this problem. I've seen it somewhere and never did it myself since I only rarely have this problem. I believe it has something to do with Windows Media Player scanning it and not letting go.

I use Stealth or Norton to burn the damn file right off my hard drive. Hasn't caused me any problems yet.

Makes sense. I renamed a file from .MPG to .MOV and tried to open with WMP. It wouldn't release it until I safe-booted.

This has been discussed here before, but I think this is the registry hack that Rallynavvie is talking about:

    link

I did this hack to my XP PC and haven't had any problems since. Do registry hacks at your own risk, and like someone mentioned, backup the registry before doing any changes. In my own case, it worked like a charm.
